Claude F. Massari MILFORD Claude F. He was born March 21, 1967, in Cooperstown, the son of Alfred F. and Barbara M. Massari.
Claude graduated from Milford Central School and Hartwick College and received his master’s degree in library science from SUNY Albany.
Claude was technical services assistant in periodicals at the Stevens-German Library of Hartwick College since 1998.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara M. Massari, of Milford; a sister, Odette E. Collins, and a niece, Allison M. Collins, both of Maryland. He is also survived by an aunt, Marie A. Terrell; and cousins, William T. MacPherson, Joseph V. Swartz, Jean Ann Harris, Ralph H. Terrell and their families. He is also survived by numerous lifelong friends.
Claude was predeceased by his father, Alfred F. Massari, in 1996.
Claude was well-known for his love of anything to do with cars and for being an avid NASCAR fan, especially No. 24. He was also noted for his quick wit and puns.
Those wishing to honor Claude’s memory may do so by making a contribution to the Milford Fire Department Emergency Squad, North Main Street, Milford, NY 13807.
There will be no funeral or calling hours.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hartwick College at a later date.
Lillian May Tootill NEW BERLIN Lillian May Tootill, 90, of New Berlin passed away Jan. 22, 2006, in New Berlin.
Lillian was born May 4, 1915, in Chicopee, Mass., the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Martin) Durocher.
Lillian married George K. Tootill on Dec. 19, 1932. He predeceased her in December 1990.
She spent her childhood in Mulira and Chicopee Falls, Mass.
Lillian was a homemaker who spent her whole life caring for her family.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church of New Berlin, where she served in the Altar Rosary Society.
Lillian is survived by one son, Donald Tootill, and his wife, Sherrie, of South Carolina; five daughters and their spouses, Bernice and Carl Eccleston, New Berlin, Shirley and Gerald Lewis, New Berlin, Mary Ann and Gordon Turner, Florida, Judy and Charles Sienkiewicz, South Carolina, and Susan and Richard Wright, Sherburne; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one grandson and one great-grandson.
Calling hours are 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Dakin Funeral Home LP, New Berlin.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Father Francis Case, of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.
Egbert (Eggy) Leach ONEONTA Egbert (Eggy) Leach, 93, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in New Berlin, Wis.
Born in Chinchilla, Pa., Eggy was the son of the late Myron and Florence (Franklin) Leach, and was predeceased by his siblings, Helen, Ernest and Richard.
Married to the late Helen Quackenbush for 66 years, Eggy lived most of his life in Oneonta.
Predeceased by his daughter, Judith, he leaves behind his three devoted sons, Myron (Vivian), Richard (Karen), and Gerald (Noreen); four grandchildren, Judith (Ken) and great-grandson, Ryan; James (Samantha) and great-grandchildren, Jesse, Kendall and Seth; Richard Jr. (Melissa), Nicole and great-grandsons, Michael and Christopher; and many nieces and nephews.
A 1932 graduate of Oneonta High School, Eggy served in the United States Navy from 1932-1936. Upon his return from the Navy, he was employed by New York Telephone for 36 years, retiring in 1973.
Eggy was an active member of the Oneonta community, freely giving of his time and talents. In 1955, Eggy helped create the Oneonta Little League and, in 1991, was honored for his participation, which spanned from its founding in 1955 through 1999.
He was also a lifelong member of the Elks Club in which he served as the Exalted Ruler in 1963.
His outstanding athletic ability earned him positions on his high school football, basketball and baseball teams and served him well when he played semi-pro baseball.
Eggy literally soared above the rest when he earned his pilot’s license, but his greatest joy was spending time with his sons and their families. Their devotion to him and his to them was palpable.
Eggy’s smile lit the room, and his laughter was contagious. He was a kind human being who eagerly jumped in to help anyone in need. He was so smart and capable that everyone seemed to turn to him to be the fixer of their problems, and he expected nothing in return.
Respected and loved by all who knew him, his one-of-a-kind character and personality will not be replaced.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, a Lodge of Sorrows will be conducted by the Oneonta Elks Club No. 1312 at 7 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.
Interment in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery will be at a later date.
The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, is serving the family.
Gerald A. Higgins SIDNEY Gerald Arthur Higgins, 90, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after suffering a stroke.
He was born July 30, 1915, son of the late Purl and Verna (Cole) Higgins in Ilion. At the age of 4, his family moved to Cooperstown, where he grew up and graduated with the class of 1934.
In 1945, Mr. Higgins enlisted in the United States Navy; he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, which he enjoyed until his discharge in 1946. With the assistance of the G.I. Bill, Gerald became an auto body repairman.
In May of 1953, Gerald married Margaret Lake in Cooperstown; they lived there until he joined Whitaker & Son and moved to Sidney in 1956. After 12 years, he changed careers and was an insurance adjuster for Mid-State appraisal service in Oneonta. Upon retirement, Mr. Higgins worked part-time for Roger Chambers in Sidney for 20 years.
Gerald was very patriotic. After World War II, he helped organize the Veterans Club in Cooperstown and was a member of the American Legion. He was always involved with Memorial Day parades and Veterans Day.
He was an avid Yankee fan and loved dogs and horses.
Gerald Higgins was a devoted husband and supportive father, following his sons from activity to activity, teaching them honesty and integrity, not only in words but by his actions.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Higgins, Sidney; son, Ed Higgins, Smyrna, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Nancy Higgins, Vestal; three grandchildren, Jill, Katherine and Brian, of Vestal; sister, Elma Pitcher, Cobleskill; nephew, Reg and Daughn Higgins, Ontario; niece, Faye Sheridan, Scranton, Pa.; and two nephews, George and Jim Osterhout, Scranton, Pa.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. David Masland officiating.
Burial will be in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad and the United Methodist Church in Sidney.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
Kathryn M. Feury COOPERSTOWN Kathryn M. Feury of Cooperstown died Jan. 23, 2006.
She was born May 23, 1909, in Dolgeville, a daughter of Truman B. and Georgianna Jones Marsh.
Kathryn was graduated from Dolgeville High School in 1927, and from the Utica Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1930. Following graduation she worked as a Registered Nurse at Mt. McGregor and Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital’s. In 1938, she became Superintendent of Nurses at Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
On Nov. 20, 1941, Kathryn married Theodore P. Feury of Cooperstown. He predeceased her in 1990. She was also predeceased by her sister, Maxine M. Potts; and her brother, John C. Marsh.
Kathryn is survived by her son, Theodore P. Feury Jr., and his wife, Dianne; and her daughter, Ellen F. Levine and her husband, Harry. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren, Theodore P. Feury III, Margit Kathryn Feury Ragland, Daniel M. Levine and Carolyn L. Lanzetta.
Interment will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.
Queenie Van Duzer MORRIS Queenie Van Duzer, 103, of Morris, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Otsego Manor in the town of Otsego.
She was born in Greene on Nov. 10, 1902, the daughter of Lizzie Hubbard and Eugene Van Duzer.
She grew up in the Binghamton and Rome areas and also had lived in Delaware County for a period of her adult life. She came to live in the Morris area around 1990 and lived in Morris until poor health forced her to relocate to the Otsego Manor.
Those who knew her said that she was feisty, sweet, and always came up with a smile. She was a religious person and had had a very hard life.
She is survived by several cousins and many friends.
A calling hour will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at which time a funeral service will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
Grace Catherine Robinson BOONVILLE Mrs. Grace Catherine Robinson, 92, formerly of Forestport, died late Sunday night, Jan. 22, 2006, at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Boonville.
Arrangements are pending with Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Gertrude Hester KILLEEN, Texas Mrs. Gertrude Hester, formerly of Hartwick, died Monday evening, Jan. 16, 2006, at Meteroplex Hospital in Killeen, Texas.
She was the wife of Coy Hester, who died Dec. 29, 1983.
A private graveside service will be conducted later this spring in Hartwick Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Carol Jean Cawley Barrows EAST SPRINGFIELD Mrs. Carol Jean Cawley Barrows, 62, of East Springfield passed away at her home on the morning of Jan. 23, 2006.
Funeral services are pending, and a full obituary will appear in Wednesday’s edition of The Daily Star.
