| her home, surrounded by her family and friends and with her beloved dog, Heidi at her side. She was 63 years of age.
Julia was born Aug. 26, 1942, the daughter of John P. and Marian (Cannistra) Rich. She was raised in Cherry Valley and graduated from Cherry Valley High School in 1960 and from Cortland State University in 1964 with a degree in nursing.
On Aug. 25, 1965, Julia married Robert W. Lafler at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Cherry Valley. Following their marriage they began their residence in the Cooperstown area.
After moving to Cooperstown, Julia was employed for nearly 15 years by Alice Busch Gronewaldt as a private duty nurse. Later she owned and operated a retail store in Cherry Valley, "The Bluebird Gift Shop" and acted as the secretary and bookkeeper for her husband’s business, "Lafler’s Hardware, Plumbing, Heating and Electrical." More recently, and for many years, Julia and Robert owned and operated, "Saint’s Rest Bed and Breakfast" a B&B located on the west side of Otsego Lake.
Julia was an active member of the community. She served for many years as the Democratic election inspector for the Towns of Cherry Valley and Otsego as well as for the Village of Cooperstown. She was a long time communicant at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Cherry Valley and was a past member of Catholic Daughters. Julia was also a frequent volunteer for the Red Cross and would often be seen assisting at Red Cross blood drives. She was an avid bowler and was active in the Tri-Valley League. Julia loved reading romance novels, cooking for her family and many friends, shopping, flower gardening and watching and feeding the birds which flocked to her property. All who knew Julia would agree that she loved and lived life to its fullest.
Julia was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 2003.
She is survived by her daughter, Colleen Kukenberger and Colleen’s husband, William Kukenberger Jr., of Hartwick; her brother, John P. Rich Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Balston Lake; her two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Ostrander, of Warren and Elizabeth Ashe, of Utica; two aunts, Ursula Mastracco, of Carmichael, Calif., and Ida Rich, of Herkimer; and her very special friend, Joseph Contalone, of Schenevus. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews; friends and her much loved canine friend, Heidi.
The family extends a very special and heart felt thank you to Dr. Matthew Jones and the entire emergency room staff at Bassett Healthcare for the wonderful and kind care, attention and compassion they displayed while assisting Julia.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Julia’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church with Father John P. Rosson, pastor officiating.
Visiting hours, with the family in attendance, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Burial will occur in the spring in the Springfield Cemetery.
For those who so desire, the family would suggest that they make contributions in Julia’s memory to the Otsego County Shriners Club, 941 County Highway 440, Charlotteville, NY 12036, for use in their work helping crippled children.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Madge B. Hanor
COOPERSTOWN Mrs. Madge B. Hanor, 88, of Eagle Street in Cooperstown, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2006, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Madge was born on Dec. 6, 1917, in Springfield, a daughter of Lawyer D. and Mary E. (Doyle) Barrett. She married Orrin Perry Hanor on May 12, 1940, in Cooperstown. Perry died Aug. 18, 1993.
When she was a young child, she and her family moved to Cooperstown where she attended school. In the early 1950s, she became employed at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown and served as a nurse’s aide. Through her own efforts, Madge later became a lab technician and retired from this position at the age of 62.
A member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, she at one time taught Sunday School at the church. In her younger years, Madge was also a member of the Cooperstown Women’s Club. During the past several years of her life, she always looked forward to receiving The Daily Star and greatly enjoyed completing the daily crossword puzzles. She also had a fondness for flowers.
Madge is survived be her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen ("Ginger") and Arthur Lawler, of Billerica, Mass.; two grandchildren, Eric Lawler, of Billerica, Mass. and Cynthia Lawler, of South Attleboro, Mass., and three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Allison Lawler and Andrew Hassey.
A graveside service will take place later this spring in the Springfield Cemetery.

Luella A. Fairbairn
ROXBURY Luella A. Fairbairn, 87, of Roxbury, formerly of Arena, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at Kingston Hospital, Kingston.
She was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Huckleberry Brook, Town of Middletown to Matthew and Alice Sanford.
She married Donald S. Fairbairn on Feb. 9, 1040, in Great Bend, Pa. He died Aug. 21, 1980.
Luella was a longtime resident of Arena and a lifelong resident of this area, spending the last 11 years at Kirkside Adult Home in Roxbury.
She attended school in Huckleberry Brook. Luella enjoyed embroidering and traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Hitt, of Margaretville and Debbie Fairbairn, of Arkville; four sons, Richard D. Fairbairn, of Bainbridge, William D. Fairbairn, of Asheville, N.C., Matthew G. Fairbairn, of Foresthill, Calif., and Roger Fairbairn, of Roxbury; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one granddaughter, Carolyn Rosa on Oct. 22, 2005.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard A. Dykstra officiating. Friends may call from noon until service time at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Lake Hill Cemetery, Dry Brook.

Robert L. Wright
Robert L. Wright, 90, of Oneonta died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home. Mr. Wright was born Jan. 10, 1916, in Elbert, Colo.
He married Edith Jane Hotaling on Jan. 6, 1946, in Denver, Colo. She predeceased him in December 1974. He married Hilda Wright in 1975. She predeceased him in April 1994.
Robert served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked as a machine operator for the Kraft Plant in Norwich. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness in Oneonta.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Cherie Blackwell and Robert Tuttle; his grandchildren, Cassandra Tuttle, Keith and Sherry Allen, Steve and Kevin Allen; and his great-grandchildren, Jon and Nathan Allen.
He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
A private family graveside memorial service and interment will be held in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Schenevus Fire Department, 40 Main St., Schenevus, NY 12155.
Ellen Roberts Danforth
SIDNEY Ellen Danforth, widow of Elliot Danforth, M.D., died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
Born in Weymouth, Mass., June 24,1908, she was the only daughter of Thomas and Mary Owen Roberts. Mrs. Danforth graduated from Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., and began her nursing career in New York City where she met and married Elliot Danforth, M.D. They moved to Sidney in 1932 and together they began a medical practice which continued for nearly 50 years.
One of her fondest interests was costume design and she served as costume manager for Tri-Town Theatre.
Survivors include Elliot Jr., M.D., of Underhill, Vt., Nicholas, M.D., of Arlington, Vt.; Thomas, of Sidney, and Edward, of Chicago, Ill.; as well as six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
For those interested, contributions to the Phelps Hose Co. of the Sidney Fire Department, would be most appreciated.

Donovan Michael Rhodes
RICHMONDVILLE Donovan Michael Rhodes, 2½ months, passed away, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006.
He was born Nov. 12, 2005, in Cooperstown, the son of Travis Baldwin and Alexandra Rhodes of Richmondville.
Donovan is also survived by his sister, Makayla Baldwin; his grandparents, Kathy Nigro, of East Worcester and Rodney and Georgia Baker, of Summit; his great-grandfather, Ralph Wilsey, of East Worcester; aunts and uncles, Amanda Comino, of East Worcester, Terry Baldwin, of Schenectady, Georgia Townsend and Kelly Baldwin, both of Rotterdam; cousins, Eleesia, Ean, Gabrielle, Zachary, Terry III and Devon; godparents, Robert Fitch, of Sharon Springs and Valerie Dibble, of Richmondville; great-uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Brian VanNatten of Idaho.
Calling hours will be 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, until the funeral service at 5 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The Rev. Gary Edmister, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Richmondville and the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Otsego County Lutheran Parishes, will officiate.
Interment will be in the Summit Cemetery.

Philip P. Fabrizzio
NORTH HARPERSFIELD Philip P. Fabrizzio, 85, a resident of North Harpersfield for 25 years, passed away at Robinson Terrace on Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.
Philip was a self-employed mason. He retired in 1985, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his children, Kathy Morissette of North Harpersfield, Robert Fabrizzio of Chiquak, Alaska, Carla Rhodes of Orlando, Fla., and Paul Fabrizzio of Miami, Fla. Also, surviving are eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Philip’s name to the Jefferson Rescue Squad, Jefferson, NY 12093.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Steven Moore at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Frances June (Skellie) Hawver
SCHENEVUS Frances June (Skellie) Hawver, 76, of Schenevus died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Oct. 27, 1929, in Westford, the daughter of Edward J. and Silva (Perry) Skellie.
She married Donald Hawver on Jan. 2, 1948, in Oneonta. A lifelong resident of the area, Fran graduated from Schenevus School in 1947. For several years she worked at the Schenevus Food Market, then she and Donald owned and operated the gas station in Schenevus.
For 12 years Fran served as town clerk for the Town of Maryland. She was a charter member of the C.H. Graham Hose Auxiliary, a member of the Schenevus VFW Auxiliary and the Schenevus Young at Heart.
She is survived by her two sons, John and Paula Hawver of Oneonta and Edward and Patty Hawver of Schenevus; three daughters, Donna Kenik and Victor Hanson of Schenevus, June and Rodney Preston and Amy and Steve Fancher, all of Worcester; her grandchildren, Lori Kelly, Jackie Fleury, John Condon, Christopher Condon, Missy Cash, Shelly Condon, Krista Goins, Karen Bennett, Michelle Yerdon, Timothy Preston, Malinda Brodie and Justin Fancher; great-grandchildren, Anna Fleury, Connor Cash, Brandon and Leah Goins, Jessica, Harley and Zach Bennett, Kaylie and Austin Yerdon, Jerred Brodie, Savannah and Kassidy Fancher. She is also survived by a brother, Rodney Skellie; three sisters, Vivian Groat, Alma Szeliga and Mary Ann Bryson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1986; and a son, Steven in 1960.
At Fran’s request, she was cremated.
A celebration of her life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Schenevus Masonic Lodge.
Interment will be in the Schenevus Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Helen M. Palmer
RICHFIELD SPRINGS Helen M. Palmer, 75, of County Highway 16, Hartwick, passed away on Thursday afternoon Feb. 2, 2006, in Mary Imogene Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born on July 11, 1930, in Rhinebeck, daughter of the late Mark and Myrtle Bowman Piester. On Oct. 10, 1964, she married George Washington Palmer in Poughkeepsie. A loving and devoted union of 35 years, he preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 2000. Mrs. Palmer and her family came to Richfield Springs in 1970.
A graduate of New Paltz State Teachers College, she taught kindergarten in the Richfield Springs Central School for 25 years.
She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the AARP. To all who knew her they will remember her warm smile and caring manner. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter,
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, JoAnn and Dexter Smith, of New Berlin, Sandra and Michael Bailey of Paisley, Fla.; three sons, Thomas and his wife Barbara Palmer, of Rhode Island, Robert and Tracey Palmer, of Wellington, Fla., Jerry Ingle, of Hartwick; one sister, Eleanor and her husband Eduard Hericourt, of Rhinebeck; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a niece and nephew.
Funeral service and committal were private and at the convenience of her family.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Heart Association.

Edwin L. Hazard
WEST EDMESTON Edwin L. Hazard, 92, of West Edmeston, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at the Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer.
He was born on Sept. 3, 1913, in the Town of Columbus, to James and Frances (Terk) Hazard.
He was married to Evelyn Matteson. She died on Sept. 3, 1970.
Ed grew up and attending various schools in the Pittsfield and New Berlin areas. He worked on various farms in the Chenango County area. He retired from Kraft Foods of South Edmeston. He also delivered the Sunday edition of the Syracuse Herald Journal for many years in the West Edmeston/Brookfield areas. He enjoyed gardening in his younger years and could often be found at the horse races at Vernon Down in later years.
Ed is survived by four daughters, Joan and Carmine Covais, of Charlotteville, Va., Susan Whitman, of Richmondville, Kathleen Fox, of Norwich, June and Frank Weinheimer, of Schenevus, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a half brother, Carl and Marion Jennings; sisters-in-law, Ione Hill, of Norwich, Sally Hazard, of Brookfield, Ann Matteson, of Cape Cod, Mass., Vera Button, of Norwich, Norma Jennings, of Florida and Frances Hazard of Arizona; brothers-in-law, Clyde and Florence Matteson, of Springfield Center, George Matteson of Georgia, Jim Eaves, of W.Va.; cousins, Ed and Joyce Zirkel and Dorothy Bowers; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.
