Harold D. Ainslie

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Harold D. "Hap" Ainslie, 75, of Ainslie Road, passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, Feb. 10, 2006, at home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Cooperstown, son of the late William J. and Edna McRorie Ainslie. A lifelong area resident, he was raised on the Ainslie family farm and educated in Richfield Springs High School. On Aug. 14, 1949, he married the former Mary Jane Snyder in the Cooperstown Baptist Church. They resided on Ainslie Road since 1955.

Before his retirement in 1995, Hap owned and operated a plumbing, heating, electrical and well-drilling business. Initially it was known as William J. Ainslie & Son and more recently as Harold Ainslie & Son. In the 1960s and ’70s, he also operated a Bombardier snowmobile dealership and was founder of the first snowmobile club in Richfield.

As a highly regarded businessman, Hap also had a strong sense of community. He was a 41-year member of Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482, Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as master in 1980, 1981 and 1990. He was a former member of the Fly Creek Valley Grange.

Hap was a strong-willed man who enjoyed the outdoors and nature. He cherished the peaceful surroundings of the woods around his home. He was happiest when he was with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Jane; three daughters, Donna Ainslie of Richfield Springs, Deb and her husband, Rick, DeJohn of Ilion, Dodie Ainslie and her partner, Gail Strausser, of Endicott; three sons and their wives, Bill and Betty Ainslie of Tavares, Fla., Warren Ainslie and Rachel Ainslie-Hamblin, Chet and Carol Ainslie, all of Richfield Springs; one brother, James and his wife, Effie, Ainslie of Richfield Springs, 10 grandchildren, Trevor and Brad Ainslie, Kim and Linda Cremeno, Jessica Barbuto, Carolyn Clark, Georgia, Ida, and Martha Ainslie-Hamblin, Candice Domion; five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, a half-brother, Leo McLean, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, will officiate.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

The family will be present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Masonic Brotherhood Fund or the Shriners Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Members of Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 F&AM are asked to meet at the funeral home for ritualistic services at 6:30 p.m. today.

Catherine F. Bose

WESTVILLE — Catherine F. Bose, 92, of Westville, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 11, 2006, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with her family at her side.

She was born Feb. 28, 1913, in the Bronx, a daughter of John Henry and Barbara A. (Zang) Eckes.

After graduating from business school, Catherine was employed as a secretary, typist and bookkeeper for Muller Roofing Co. in the Bronx.

Upon retiring in 1959, she moved to Herkimer and later moved to the Cooperstown area, where she made her home with her daughter, Madeline.

Raised in the Catholic faith, she devotedly recited the Rosary every day. She was also a friend and supporter of her daughter’s church, the Westville United Methodist Church. For many years, she was quite active as an assistant Girl Scout leader and enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint and traveling.

Catherine is survived by one daughter, Madeline F. Dennis of Westville and her fiance, Frank Lombardo, of Schenevus; two sons, Harold Bose and his wife, Violet, of Peoria, N.C., and Eugene Bose and his wife, Jean, of Glenview, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Cindy Wall and her husband, Dale, of Ames, Cathy Dennis of Westville, Bob Dennis and his wife, Barbara, of St. Johnsville, Tom Dennis and his wife, Kara, of Glens Falls, Chris Dennis and his wife, Deb, of Hartwick; Scott Bose and his wife, Virginia, of Carlton, Texas, and Mary Rhodes and her husband, Marcq, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 great-grandchildren, Becky Allen and her husband, Shawn, of Mayfield, Nicholas Wall of Ames, Daniel Wall of Missouri, Jesse Dennis of St. Johnsville, Leanne, Stephany, Justin and Timothy Dennis, all of Schuyler Lake, Dustin and Ashley Dennis of Hartwick and Marissa Rhodes of Jacksonville, Fla.; one great-great grandson, Shawn Matthew Allen of Mayfield, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Catherine Frances Bose, her brother, John Eckes, and one grandson, Matthew Paul Dennis, who died July 4, 2000.

A funeral service in celebration of Catherine’s life will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at the Westville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rose Bellen officiating.

Burial will take place later this spring at the Westville Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lawrence E. Perry

HENSLEY, W.Va. — Lawrence E. Perry, 84, died Saturday morning, Feb. 11, 2006.

Larry was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Hensley Coal Camp, W. Va., to Sarah and Wilson Perry.

A baker by profession, Larry worked for many years at the Walton Bakery. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines.

On Sept. 27, 1941, he married Eleanor Kelleher of Brooklyn, daughter of Thomas and Mary Kelleher.

Larry was the beloved father of Lawrence Jr. (Washington, D.C.), Thomas (deceased), Paul (Ballston Lake), Stephen (Titusville, Fla.), Ellen (Otego), Marianne (Wells Bridge), Michael (Davenport), Andrew (Trout Creek) and Kathleen (Oneonta). He is also survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor (Stamford), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Landers Funeral Home in Sidney

There will be a Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, followed by a burial service in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

In lieu of flowers, relatives request a donation to Robinson Terrace or Hospice of Delaware County.

Dale Richard Wilson

CHOTEAU, Mont. — Dale Richard Wilson, 56, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at the Teton Medical Center in Choteau, Mont., after a long illness.

Dale was born May 5, 1949, in Walton, the son of Richard and Esther (Dow) Wilson. He graduated from Sidney High School and received an associate’s degree in computer system integration from the University of Great Falls. He was a veteran of the United States Naval Submarine Service, retiring after 22 years, 4 months and 18 days of service. He was a navigator on the SS-567 USS Gudgeon, the SS-N677 USS Drum and the SSN680 USS William H. Bates.

After his retirement from the military, he worked at various jobs in Choteau, including Christenson Construction, farming for Doug Ferries and as a "mixologist" at the Wagon Wheel.

Dale was married to Kat Carothers on May 12, 2000, in Great Falls. He was previously married to and divorced from Corrine MacDonald, Geri Blevins and Carla J. Wall.

Dale was a member of the Choteau American Legion and was a past post commander. He enjoyed hunting with his son-in-law, fishing and drinking. He was a singer of songs, player of guitar and all- around good-time guy. Dale has greatly enjoyed playing guitar in many places for many different types of people.

He is survived by his wife, Kat Wilson, of Choteau; his mother, Esther Wilson, of Unadilla; daughters, Danielle Web of Rhode Island, Stephanie Spry of Sidney, Milissa (Joshua) Riphenburg, Amanda Carratt and Cheryl Marschner, all of Choteau; brothers, James (wife, Karen) Wilso, of Sidney and Rodney (and wife, Beth) Wilson of New Jersey, and grandchildren, Tyler, Chelsea, Meagan, Veronica, Venessa, Even and Alex.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the United Methodist Church in Choteau.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder Funeral Home. Interment of his cremated remains with full military honors will be in the Choteau Cemetery.

A reception will be held at the United Methodist Church following committal rites at the cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the C. James Smith American Legion, Post No. 6 in Choteau.

Claire Gunther

ONEONTA — Claire Gunther, 96, formerly of Otego, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Stuttgart, Germany, the daughter of Herman and Pauline (Konninger) Heinrich. She married George Gunther on Jan. 12, 1935. Mr. Gunther predeceased her May 4, 1986.

Claire was a homemaker and had resided in Otego for 33 years before becoming a resident of the Hampshire House Adult Home in October 1999. Later, in 2003, her care was provided by the staff at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she continued to reside until the time of her death. Earlier, she and her late husband owned and operated a dairy farm for many years in the Garrattsville area.

Claire is survived by a daughter, Claire E. Sposili, of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Norman G. and Phyllis M. Gunther, also of Oneonta. She is also survived by a grandson, Michael C. Sposili, and his wife, Michele, and great-granddaughters, Lauren and Alison Sposili, all of Clifton Park. Also surviving is her very special and dear friend, Martha McCune, of Otego.

In addition to her husband, Claire was predeceased by her son-in-law, Martin C. Sposili. Her brother, Ernst, and sisters Frida and Elsie also preceded her in death.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services. It was Claire’s wish to become part of the Anatomical Gift Program of Albany Medical College for the purpose of medical education and/or research. Interment will occur at a later date.

Claire’s family extends its deepest gratitude to the physicians and staff of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the fine care she received while a resident of the facility.

Agnes Rose Garthaffner

ARKVILLE — Agnes Rose Garthaffner, 88, of Dry Brook Road, Arkville, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Mountainside Residential Center, Margaretville.

Born July 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, Agnes was the daughter of Felix and Susanna (Glowenska) Cetner.

She married Gerard M. J. Garthaffner on Sept. 19, 1942, at St. Stanislaus Church, Brooklyn. He died March 26, 1976.

Agnes was a dedicated tennis player, a person that read many books and was an expert crossword puzzle player. She also loved to knit and crochet.

The family home was built in 1960 and it became her permanent home in 1977.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville, and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program.

Agnes is survived by four sons, Gerard Garthaffner, twins, Robert and daughter-in-law Sandie, Martin and daughter-in-law Linda and William and daughter-in-law Laura; grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Jean, Aaron, John, Travis, Joseph, Todd, Shelly and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Kassandra, Christian, Joseph, Justin, James and Payden; a beloved cousin, Stella V. Widenski; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Rita Adams, on Jan. 1, 1976, and a son, Peter, on March 30, 1999; and two brothers, Theodore and Edward Cetner.

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Frank Batencourt officiating.

Committal services will be private.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 until service time at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Kent J. Sheldon

GERRARDSTOWN, W. Va. — Kent J. Sheldon, 51, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Winchester Medical Center.

He was born June 16, 1954, at Cooperstown. He was the son of Veronica Jones Sheldon of Winchester and the late George Lenon Sheldon.

Kent was the owner of Sheldon’s Tree Service. He was a member of the Wanderers Car Club of Cooperstown.

In addition to his mother, Kent is survived by his wife, Mary E. Sheldon, at home; one sister, Jean Armstrong and her husband, Mike, of Winchester; one niece, Rebecca Armstrong, and one nephew, Brian Armstrong, both of Winchester.

He leaves numerous family members and friends in the Cooperstown area, where services will be held later.
