Elizabeth A. Eggleston COOPERSTOWN Elizabeth (Betty) Eggleston, 82, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at her home.
Betty was born Aug. 23, 1923, daughter of Lena (Plantz) Adamy and E. Ward Adamy in Syracuse. As a young girl, her family moved to Hannibal, where she graduated from high school. She then completed her music degree at Ithaca College.
Betty was well-known for her beautiful singing voice and love of music, as well as her endless energy to do for others.
She came to Milford in 1945, as the new music teacher and soon became involved with the Milford Methodist Church choir. She served as the director for more than 50 years. That is where she met her husband, Osborn. They were married Aug. 14, 1947, and she became an active partner with her husband, Oz, running the family farm and raising seven children.
Betty was also very involved in activities and organizations outside of the home. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a charter and longtime member of the Catskill Choral Society, a "pillar" of the Milford United Methodist Church and was especially known for her contributions to the music life of the church, as well as her ability and the countless hours spent organizing and working on church suppers throughout the years.
She held leadership roles in all of these organizations, as well as teaching music at Milford Central School. She taught private piano lessons for many years. For a period of time, she was a privately contracted school bus driver for the Milford School.
In 2001, Betty was recognized and honored by the Milford Rotary Club with the Community Service Award for her significant contributions to the community over the years.
Betty embraced life and had a special love and appreciation for nature, passing these gifts on to her children as a wonderful role model. Her extended family will always remember her wonderful homemade root beer that was one of the highlights at family reunions up until the past few years.
Betty is survived by her husband, Osborn, Cooperstown; three daughters, Kathryn (Calvin) Chase, Oneonta, Sandra (Mark) Andrews, Wilmington, Del., and Janet (George) Blatsos, Cooperstown; four sons, Jeffrey, Cooperstown, Robert (Diane), Skaneateles, Ralph (Laura), Cooperstown, Philip (Cheryl), Warner Robins, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffrey and Kelly Chase; Kristin, Craig, Diane, Tony, Sarah and Hugh Andrews, Jason Blatsos, Jennifer and James Eggleston, Elijah and Erica Eggleston, and Ellen Eggleston; and one great-granddaughter, Cappagnia-Lynne Chase. She is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
As well as her parents, Betty was predeceased by her sister, Kathryn Allura Adamy; and two infant brothers; as well as two grandchildren, Eric and Christie Chase.
All who knew and loved Betty are invited to a memorial service celebrating her life at the Milford United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, with the Rev. Maryellen Moore, pastor of the church, officiating. The family will be in attendance at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service to receive friends.
