Richard A. Conklin

NEW LISBON — Richard A. Conklin, 67, of New Lisbon, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Cooperstown, the son of Roscoe and Rubie (Sergent) Conklin.

He married Susie A. Renwick on July 27, 1957, in St. Mary’s Church, Cooperstown.

Dick retired as the Safety Risk Manager for NCOC BOCES in Stamford, where he worked for nine years. While there, he founded the Association of Superintendents of Building and Grounds. Before that, he held the position of superintendent for buildings and grounds in the Oneonta, Milford, and New Berlin school districts.

Before moving back to the area in 1972, he was presentence officer for the Superior Court of the state of Delaware. From 1960 to 1969, he was an FBI investigator with the Washington, D.C., and Wilmington, Del., offices.

While living in Wilmington, Del., he was active in Little League and Boy Scouts. Upon returning to this area, he maintained his affiliation with the Boy Scouts and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 72 in Hartwick.

He was a member of the Hartwick Fire Department and the Cooperstown Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Susie A. Conklin, of New Lisbon; his children, Leigh Ann Conklin and her partner, Don Bogle, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Jacqueline Conklin and her husband, Robert McGuire, of Cobleskill, Mark Conklin Sr. and his wife, Kimberly, of Lawton, Okla., and Jan Conklin and her husband, Ritchie Coster, of New York City; six grandchildren, Victor, Brent and Shane Jones, Mark Conklin Jr., and Brooke and Dustin Snell; two cousins, Kathleen Ryan and Gladys Thompson; two special brothers-in-law, John and James Renwick; as well as a former son-in-law, Lyle Jones.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Richard A. Conklin will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Hartwick Community Center in Hartwick.

Burial will be in the spring in the Lena Cemetery, New Lisbon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartwick Fire Department, Laurens Emergency Squad, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association, Upstate NY Chapter, 6 Automation Lane, Albany, NY 12205.

The family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff at Bassett Hospital, especially Dr. James Leonardo, and the oncology unit.

Karl F. Guntert

EAST MEREDITH — Karl F. Guntert, 91, of East Meredith, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 1, 1914, at his parent’s home in Harpersfield, the son of Ferdinand and Teresa (Brogle) Guntert.

He married Elizabeth A. Mathis on Dec. 16, 1945, in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.

Karl was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre of operations as a medical technician. He sailed on the Queen Mary to England in 1943 to begin his service abroad, serving in England and Belgium.

After returning from Europe, he began farming in East Meredith.

Retiring from farming in 1980, he began traveling — Alaska, Europe, Hawaii, China, Italy, Scandinavia, Nova Scotia, across Canada by train, and a USA round trip to the West Coast and back by car.

Karl was an active member in his community and served on many boards and held memberships in several groups and organizations. He was president of the Eastern Milk Producers; president and director of the Delaware Dairy Herd Improvement Association; member, president and director of the Farm Bureau, Delaware County Cooperative Extension; served as a Fire Commissioner for the Meridale Fire Department; was an assessor for the town of Meredith for several years; a member of the Meredith Senior Citizens; and a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of East Meredith; a son, Paul Guntert of Hyde Park; a daughter, Lucy Guntert of East Meredith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Marie Guntert, and two brothers, Ernest and Max.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2006, at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Michael Flannery as celebrant.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will take place in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Meridale Fire Department or Emergency Squad in loving memory of Karl F. Guntert.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Harold A. Johnson

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Harold A. Johnson, 88, of South Kortright, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Hjalmar Johnson and Anna Madsen Osen.

He married Marion Martin on May 19, 1945, in Tarrytown. She predeceased him Jan. 18, 1991.

Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Tarrytown and North Tarrytown before moving to South Kortright in 1984.

He served in the United States Coast Guard as a Sonarman Second Class during World War II in the North Atlantic, being honorably discharged June 24, 1946.

He was employed for more than 30 years with General Motors in Tarrytown in assembly- line work.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Tarrytown; Tarrytown Volunteer Fire Department; and Westchester County Police Revolver/Rifle League.

Survivors include a sister, Julia Selmer, San Marcos, Calif.; two brothers, Edward Johnson, New Hope, Minn., and Wilfred (Bill) Johnson, Perham, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral service at this time.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. May 20, 2006, in Valley View Cemetery, Rose’s Brook Road, South Kortright.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice; South Kortright Fire Department; or Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

David C. Protzman

COOPERSTOWN — David C. Protzman, 92, a former Glen Avenue resident, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at The Otsego Manor.

He was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 11, 1913, the son of Charles and Marian Ada Coates Protzman.

He was a graduate of Brooklyn Friends School and received his registered nursing degree from Brooklyn State Hospital.

In 1946, he married the former Helen Sango. The couple resided in Brooklyn and Queens for several years, where they owned and operated an adult- care home. They moved to Cooperstown in 1968, where the couple operated the Glensango Adult Care Home. Mrs. Protzman died in 2000.

Mr. Protzman was a professional photographer and operated David Coates Fine Photography for many years.

He was also a well-known editorialist, having many articles published in various area newspapers.

Surviving are his son, Robin N. Protzman of Cooperstown; four grandchildren, Thomas L. Pavlot Jr. of New Hartford, Delvena P. Rogers and her husband, Robert Rogers, of Clinton, and Parker N. and Blake R. Protzman of South Glens Falls; three great-grandchildren, Taylor N. Royce-Pavlot and Morgan A. Royce-Pavlot of Corning and Olivia E. Rogers of Clinton; three sisters-in-law, Katherine Katzeral of New Hartford, Nancy Sango of Clinton and Marie Sango of New Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Protzman was predeceased by a daughter, Diane P. Pavlot, in 1984.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Owens-Pavlot Funeral Service, Inc., Clinton.

Steve Spytko

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Steve Spytko, 77, of state Highway 28, beloved husband of the late Genevieve "Jennie" Spytko, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 27, 2006, at The Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.

MILFORD — A Masonic service for Charles A. Osborn will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, during visiting hours 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Main Street, Milford.
