Doris B. Brown SPRINGFIELD CENTER Doris B. Brown completed her final journey home March 3, 2006, at the age of 94.
She was born Nov. 27, 1911, the daughter of Clarence and Zela (Snyder) Burst in Springfield Center, where she resided for 90 years.
She was a 1929 graduate of Springfield and continued her education at Hartwick College, graduating magna cum laude in 1933. After her graduation, she taught for several years in the Springfield school system.
On Aug. 5, 1939, she married Deforest C. Brown. She left teaching to help in the operation of their dairy farm and to raise her family. Upon retiring from farming in 1970, she returned to work in the Springfield school system until retiring in 1981, at the age of 70.
At that time, she continued to be active by filling many hours with volunteer services. She was a regular volunteer at Bassett Hospital, The Meadows and delivered Meals on Wheels, as well as supporting the organizations to which she belonged. She was most happy when busy serving others. Many of her hours were spent baking and cooking. Her greatest pleasure was distributing her "treats" to friends in the community.
Doris was more affectionately known as "Grandma Brown" to many whose lives she touched.
In her early years, she was active in the Eastern Star of Springfield Center. In later years, she became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield, Women’s Association of the church, Springfield Historical Society, Springfield Grange and the Club of 10.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Deforest, on Aug. 18, 1982; and her eldest son David on Jan. 12, 1986.
Survivors include her children, Darwin and his wife, Jean, of Chaumont, Delores Yerdon and her husband, Everett, of Roseboom, Butch and his wife, Helen, of East Dover, Vt., Dale of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Darlene of Freiberg, Germany; daughter-in-law, Barbara Mead and her husband, Bob, of Clyde; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Flossie Brown and Eva Harrison.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2006, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the East Springfield Presbyterian Church with Pastor Susan Burdsall officiating.
Spring burial will take place in Springfield Center Cemetery.

Raymond C. Grant NORTH NORWICH Raymond C. Grant, 80, longtime resident of North Norwich, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, in the Mease Countryside Hospital of Safety Harbor, Fla.
The son of Earl and Myrtle (Folts) Grant, Ray was born in Norwich on April 22, 1925. He spent his school years in the North Norwich and Norwich schools, then enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He served his country from 1942-1946, spending three years in the South Pacific and an additional year in San Francisco. Returning home, Ray returned to his interrupted education, graduating from Norwich High School with the class of 1948.
On Jan. 24, 1947, in Norwich, Ray married Barbara J. Ferguson. She predeceased him Jan. 2, 2005.
Ray began his working career shortly after graduating high school, beginning as an apprentice with the C & U Telephone Corporation at the age of 22.
He was a charter member of the IBEW No. 1725, and retired in May of 1985 as an installer/repair supervisor after 38 years with the company.
Away from the job, Ray was very involved with the community of North Norwich. He was a longtime member of the North Norwich Methodist Church. He served as a town councilman for several years, and he and Barbara were original organizers of the North Norwich Fire Department. Ray was also a past member of the Norwich Moose Club, a life member of the Norwich Elks Lodge No. 1222 and a member of American Legion Post No. 189 of Norwich.
In his early years, Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing. In mid-life, he preferred camping in the Adirondacks, and switched to golf in his later years, especially enjoying playing at the Mt. Top Golf Club in Sherburne, where he was a member.
An avid bowler, Ray was a member of the Norwich Bowling Hall of Fame, inducted in 1986. He had bowled for more than 50 years in the Norwich and Earlville leagues and in mixed leagues at the Plaza Lanes and the Elks Club, and had bowled in 25 national tournaments for the Elks and American Legion, enjoying driving to most of those tournaments in his beloved 1967 Carolina Blue, two-door Cadillac convertible. Ray was president of the Earlville Bowling Association for several years and, in 1994, bowled a perfect 300 game there.
Most recently, Ray had enjoyed wintering in Clearwater, Fla.
Ray is survived by his children, David Grant of King, N.C., Terry Pratt and husband Thomas of Guilford, and Patricia Farrell and husband Mark of Palm Harbor, Fla.; by his grandchildren, Jennifer and Raymond Grant and Shawn and Erin Farrell; and by his sister, Emily Grodecki of Norwich. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Richard and Robert Ferguson; and by nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife of 58 years, Barbara Grant, Ray was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Grant, in 1936, and his brother, Gage Grant, in 1984.
Funeral services for Ray will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. James Collins, Methodist minister, will officiate.
Interment with full military rites will be at a later date in the North Norwich Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Mary (Madeline) Hurlbutt NEW BERLIN Mary (Madeline) Hurlbutt, 84, of New Berlin, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
Mary was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Brookfield, the daughter of John and Sara (Brown) Burch.
She married Frederick F. Hurlbutt on Dec. 20, 1941. He predeceased her Jan. 28, 2005.
Mary spent her childhood in the Brookfield and Leonardsville area. She was a graduate of Leonardsville Central School.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Nancy and Joseph Gennosa of Elmira; three sons, Rodney Hurlbutt of New Berlin, Gregory and Blanche Hurlbutt of Edmeston, and William and Stacy Hurlbutt of Lawrence, Kan.; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Gennosa and Rich Terwilliger, Christine and Patrick Klee and Allison, Amy and Anita Gennosa, Josh Hurlbutt, Brian and Jennifer Hurlbutt, and Brynne and Regan; her brothers and sisters, Ralph and Robert Burch, Thelma Jones and Doris Root.
She retired from Welch’s Livestock Market Restaurant after 15 years of service.
Mary was a member of the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston.
Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2006, with the funeral service at 2 p.m., at the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston, with the Rev. Jeff McLallan officiating.
Interment will be in Gazlay Cemetery, South Edmeston.
Memorial donations may be made to the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston, or the Gilmore Nursing Home, Norwich.

Elizabeth K. ’Betty’ Underwood ROXBURY Elizabeth K. "Betty" Underwood, 77, of Roxbury, passed away Friday, March 3, 2006, at her residence.
Betty was born Feb. 14, 1929, in Gilboa, the daughter of Miles Kohler and Hazel Brownell.
She married Daniel Underwood on Dec. 16, 1950, in Gilboa.
Betty was the secretary for the principal of Roxbury Central School for 30 years, until her retirement.
Betty had lived in Roxbury since being married.
She was a member of the Roxbury United Methodist Church and also served as treasurer, and a member of the ladies organization of the church. Betty was very active in the Roxbury Community Christmas Project.
Betty is survived by her husband, Daniel Underwood of Roxbury; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Underwood of New Paltz; two sons, David and his wife, Karen, Underwood of Roxbury, and John and his wife, Kathy, Underwood of Hanover, N.H.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Miles "Mike" and Lois Kohler of Roxbury, and Karl and Beth Kohler of Greer, S.C.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie Talrico of Ormond Beach, Fla., Ellen and William Bowie of Gilboa, and Marjorie and Floyd Brainard of South Gilboa; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. today, March 6, 2006, at the Roxbury United Methodist Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. William Hawes officiating.
Burial will be in the Old Yellow Church Cemetery, Stratton Falls Road, Roxbury.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Christian Children’s Fund.

Marion R. Maurer WALTON Marion R. Maurer, 84, of Walton, passed away Friday evening, March 3, 2006, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a long illness.
Marion was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 7, 1921, the daughter of the late August and Teresa Willnauer Hartman.
She worked in Cunningham’s Laundry, Flushing, for many years.
On March 4, 1948, she married Peter Maurer in Maryland. He died Feb. 15, 1999.
She loved to go to Atlantic City on bus trips with her sister, Loretta. Marion also loved to play bingo with her friends, Myra, Buck, Rae, Lula, Doris and Marion. During the day, Marion could often be found at TA’s for lunch.
Marion had a heart of gold and would always help people in any way she could.
She is survived by her sister, Loretta Nadzadi of Cobleskill; a brother-in-law, John and Margie Meyericks; a sister-in-law, Ronnie Jurens; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 6, 2006, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Church, Benton Avenue, Walton, with the Rev. Michael Flannery officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
