Donald K. Salisbury MIDDLEFIELD Donald K. Salisbury, 76, of Murphy Hill in the town of Middlefield, died Friday evening, March 10, 2006, at his home.
Don was born April 23, 1929, at home in Oneonta, the son of Robert D. and Marian A. (Rowe) Salisbury.
Shortly after he was born, his family moved to the Loamland farm in Milford and thereafter to the McLaury farm in Cooperstown Junction. In early 1937, the family moved to the old Murphy farm in Middlefield. Don attended grade school in one- and two-room schools in Maryland and later Westville. He graduated from Milford Central School in 1948.
After high school, Don enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was called to active duty on Nov. 1, 1950. On June 12, 1951, Don was wounded in battle on the Korean Peninsula. He returned to inactive duty May 12, 1952, and was discharged April 20, 1959. For his service, he was awarded the Korean War Medal by the South Korean government, a Battle Star, Purple Heart and the United Nations Korean War Ribbon.
On Oct. 5, 2005, at a ceremony held at the American Legion Hall in Oneonta, Don, along with 15 other Korean War veterans, received The Liberty Award from the New York State Senate, recognizing "exceptional heroic acts and achievements" as Korean War veterans.
Don married Carol Johnson on Nov. 8, 1952, and they lived in the New Haven, Conn., area for 16 years while he worked on the railroads, at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, and as a construction worker specializing in concrete foundations. After a divorce, Don returned to the family farm in Middlefield and began his own business, "Don’s Foundations." Over his lifetime, he estimated, he had poured more than 1,000 foundations.
On Sept. 5, 1970, he married his current wife, Marion (Bruce) Conrey.
Don was fascinated by history and family genealogy. He spent many, many hours tracing his ancestors and those of his friends and acquaintances. He was the president of the annual Salisbury Family Reunion for 27 years. He was a member of the Davenport Historical Society and Central New York Genealogical Society.
Don is survived by his wife, Marion, and six children, Paul Salisbury and his wife, Susan, of Connecticut; Steve Salisbury and his wife, Sue, of Bradford, Conn., Shelly Uscinski and her husband, Robert, of Merrimack, N.H., Keith Salisbury and his wife, Lori, of Westbrook, Conn., Robert Salisbury, in the military and stationed in Missouri, and Susan Coury and her husband, David, of Oneonta. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Carol (Conrey) Preston of Newark Valley and Val Conrey of Murphy Hill; an older sister; a brother, Herbert Salisbury, of Mannsville; a sister, Janice Sperbeck, and her friend Art Slocum of Oneonta; one aunt, Grace Van Slyke of Indiana, nine grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Don will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on North Main Street in Milford with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 14.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, those who so desire make contributions to The Museum of the History of Charlotteville, Charlotteville, NY 12036, in Don’s memory.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Willis Brown ONEONTA Willis Brown, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
Willis was born in Shavertown, the son of Augusta and Scovia (Haynes) Brown, on Feb. 15, 1916.
He married Nancy J. Vroman in 1954 at the Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta.
Willis served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force. After the war, Willis went to trade school in Washington state to became an airplane mechanic. He worked at Catskill Airways from 1966 until retirement.
Willis also had his pilot’s license. When he was younger, he enjoyed flying. He was an avid collector of model airplanes, especially W.W.II planes. He liked watching stock-car races both at the track and on TV. In his later years, during the summer, he liked riding his lawnmower and keeping his lawn nice and trimmed. He had a faithful companion in his dog, a Pomeranian named Happy. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and new great-grandchild.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Nancy J. Brown, of Oneonta; his two children, Rose Grant of Oneonta, and Bruce and his wife, Patty, Brown of Laurens; his four grandchildren, Casey Grant of Oneonta, Jason Brown of Laurens, Christopher and his wife, Carrie, Brown of Laurens, and Katie Brown of Laurens; his great-grandchild, Emily Brown of Laurens; his sister-in-law, Edna Ingram of Meridale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by both of his parents and his two brothers.
A memorial service will be offered at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Polly Bailey and the Rev. Charlie Bailey officiating.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, when the family will be in attendance.

Issac W. ’Bob’ Finkle WALTON Issac W. "Bob" Finkle, 84, of Walton, passed away Friday morning, March 10, 2006, at home, after a long illness.
Bob was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Windham, the son of the late Robert and Cora Place Finkle.
He married the former Maude Eva Titch. She died in 2001.
Bob proudly served his country in the Air Force from Nov. 2, 1939 to Nov. 1, 1964. While serving in the military, he traveled all over the world. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon and the American Theatre Ribbon. Upon retirement as a master sergeant from the Air Force, he was manager of the National Bank of Delaware County, Andes branch.
He was active in the American Legion and a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1963. He was also a member of the Andes Grange for many years.
Bob is survived by one daughter, Debra Finkle-Stanton, and husband Kevin of Walton; two sons, William "Bob" Finkle and wife Ana of Middletown and Theodore Finkle of Andes; seven grandchildren, Justin and Brandon Stanton, Nicholas, Sasha, Matthew, Jennifer and Theodore Finkle.
A private service will be held at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton, at the convenience of the family.
A graveside service will be held in Shavertown Cemetery in the spring.

Nedra A. Sobol ONEONTA – Nedra A. Sobol, 89, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006, at home.
She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Maryland, the daughter of Andrew G. and Mildred A. Gobel. At an early age, the family moved to Oneonta.
She married Leonard (Tex) Sobol on Aug. 28, 1948.
Mrs. Sobol was employed by W.T. Grant Co. in Oneonta, for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Martha Chapter 116.
In addition to her husband of 57 years, Nedra is survived by her sisters, Hilda M. Transue of Cortland, Gladys G. Quinn of Syracuse, Adah N. and Walter Byam of Syracuse, Millicent E. and Curtis Combs of Walton; her brothers, Harold T. Gobel of Essex Junction, Vt., and Donald R. and Joan Gobel of Apalachin; nieces, Tonia and James Roberts of Cortland, Donna and William Boyd of Endicott, Linda and Ronald Feitz of Marlton, N.J., Diane and Michael Longford of York, Pa., and Inge Gobel of Essex Junction, Vt.; nephews, Douglas Simmons of Fort Plain, Craig and MaryAnn Byam of Syracuse and Mark and Lisa Gobel of Oneonta; as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews; and her wonderful and caring second family, Don and Peg Stiefel of Oneonta and their family.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Beatrice I. Simmons and Dorothy B Gobel.
Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor at the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, officiating.
Interment will be later in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Veronica ’Ronnie’ Mason NEW LISBON Veronica "Ronnie" Mason, 88, formerly of New Lisbon and New York City, passed away gently Friday, March 10, 2006.
She was born June 21, 1917, in New York City, the daughter of James and Angeline Smith.
She married Frank "Barney" Mason in 1939. While her husband served in the United States Army during World War II, Ronnie worked at a defense plant. She worked beside Frank at their fish market in Brooklyn until they and their children moved to New Lisbon in 1962.
For many years Ronnie was a stay-at-home mom, loving and caring for her family. She returned to work later in life at the Otsego School and then at Pathfinder Village. She truly loved this work, which brought her many children to teach and care for. Failing eyesight ended her work career. At 65, she achieved a longtime goal of earning her GED.
Ronnie enjoyed growing roses and watching the birds. She loved to read and always took pleasure in music. She looked forward to the sing-a-long at Hampshire House, where she resided until shortly before her passing. All her life, the needs of her family came first.
This warm, loving woman is survived by her son, William, and his wife, Deborah, of Schenevus; her daughter, Kathaleen, and partner Catherine Holmes of Oneonta, and her two grandchildren, Christopher ("CJ") and Erin.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 2001. They will be together again.
Friends may call at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Johnston Funeral Home, 60 Broad St. Morris, until proceeding to a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Morris. The Very Rev. John Burns will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.
Flowers and expressions of sympathy may be directed to the funeral home.

Jerome D. Young SPRINGFIELD CENTER Jerome D. (Jerry) Young, 76, of Springfield Center, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006, at University Hospital, Syracuse.
Service arrangements are incomplete at this time.
