health. He lived a fulfilling life, and he was a good guy.

He was born March 19, 1915, to Veronica and Otto Mietzelfeld in Brooklyn, grew up on President Street, and later moved to Ridgewood, N.J.

After high school, he took engineering courses at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Clarkson College, The Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and Pratt Institute.

At one point in the mid-1930s he took an extended tour of Europe by rail, even venturing into Ukraine and Soviet Russia.

He worked in his father’s machine shop, Community Machine and Tool Works, Inc., where they specialized in high- tolerance metal parts for teletype machines for the Associated Press and United Press International, among other customers. The shop was located on Pearl Street in Manhattan and later moved to Long Island City. Larry was especially proud of work they did for the war effort on the Norden Bomb Sight, an indispensable aid for military aircraft.

Larry had a lifelong interest in trains, especially steam locomotives, and even drove some engines as a summer job in New Jersey.

During the war, he was a Staff Sergeant in the Army 1897th Engineer Aviation Battalion and saw action around Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, New Guinea, and the Ryukyu Islands.

Larry returned to the states, took a much-needed vacation in Florida, and there met his wife, Mary, of Winnetka, Ill., also on vacation at the time. They married in August 1946 and moved into a small apartment in Greenwich Village, where Mary experienced some degree of culture shock. They moved to the suburbs after a time, living in White Plains, Ossining, and Briarcliff Manor.

Larry settled into a commuter lifestyle, reading the NY Times on the daily train ride to the city while gazing on the Hudson River he came to love. Raising a family of two children, he took over the operation of the machine shop, and was especially gratified to produce parts for the oxygen valves for the Apollo Space Program, an extremely challenging job requiring great accuracy.

Mary and Larry eventually retired to Asheville, N.C., in 1983, then moved back to Somers in 1998 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The following year, his beloved Mary passed away rather suddenly.

He moved into the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford in early 2004 and enjoyed the company of people with similar experiences and the help of a very dedicated, friendly, and capable staff.

He is survived by his two children, Mary Lawrie and her husband, Ed Raker, in Manhattan, and Lawrence Jr. (Renny) and his wife, Becky (DeMulder), and their two children, Mer Maia and Mathias Todd of Unadilla. He also has four sisters, Margaret (Peg) Rowlenson, living in Moorestown, N.J., Sr. Judith Mietzelfeld in Vienna, Austria, Jeanne Maihafer of Nashville, Tenn., and Dorothy Benedict in Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, the Rev. Richard Mietzelfeld in Clearwater, Fla.

Behe Funeral Home in Oxford will be taking care of arrangements. No services are planned at this time.

The family would prefer to mourn privately.

Any contributions or flowers may be sent to the NYS Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
