Cecile G. Pier

MILFORD — Cecile G. Pier, 92, formerly of Milford, died Friday evening, March 17, 2006, at The Otsego Manor, surrounded by her family.

Cecile was born in Exland, Wis., on Jan. 14, 1914, to Moses and Nettie (Veness) Beaudin. She moved with her family to the Milford area in 1920, and, after meeting lifelong Milford resident Homer Pier at a local dance, married him Oct. 7, 1933.

During their 65 years together, they raised four children and enjoyed many wonderful times with them, and their grandchildren, their great- and great-great-grandchildren. Homer died Nov. 20, 1998.

Cecile enjoyed being a wife and mother, and she especially derived great pleasure from her role as a homemaker, who was, first and foremost, devoted to her family.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great- and great-great-grandchildren, and always spoke of each of them with great affection and pride.

Locally, she was well-known for her cooking and baking and, in particular, for her delicious homemade bread.

She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Moore and her husband, Robert, of Milford; her son, Ronald Pier and his wife, Pam, also of Milford; her brother, Dale Beaudin and his wife, Joyce, of Cleveland, Ohio; and by 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as by six nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Homer, Cecile was predeceased by her son, Roger Pier of Milford; her daughter, Loretta Thompson and Loretta’s husband, Dick, also of Milford; three of her brothers, Gerald and John of Milford and Bernard of Wisconsin; and by her sister, Vivian Tait of Oneonta.

A memorial service in the Milford United Methodist Church and burial in the Milford Cemetery will occur in May. Notice of the date and time of the service will be published in a later edition of The Daily Star.

The family suggests that those who so desire remember Cecile by donations in her memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Eva N. Clifford

DELHI — Eva N. Clifford, 77, of Delhi, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006, in Sarasota, Fla.

She was born Jan. 16, 1929, in Marcellus, the daughter of Paul and Julia Nowey.

She married Peter C. Clifford on Aug. 20, 1955, at St. Francis Xavier in Marcellus. They were residents of Delhi their entire married lives.

Eve was a graduate of Marcellus High School and SUNY Potsdam. Following graduation from college, she taught elementary grades in Walton, Delhi and Andes for many years. Friends, fellow workers, former students and parents considered her an outstanding teacher and great contributor to their communities’ welfare. She was able to combine her teaching skills with love and compassion.

Eve was also active in social and cultural affairs at SUNY Delhi. Quoting one of her friends, "Eve was the most special lady. She was always so kind and sweet."

Eve was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.

An avid golfer, she was a member of the Delhi College Golf Club and Rolling Green Golf Club of Sarasota.

Eve is survived by her husband, Peter Clifford, of Delhi and Sarasota; two sisters, Alice Kany of Ithaca and Mary Rusyniak of Marcellus; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Nowey of Marcellus and Mary Jane Clifford of Blossvale; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and by two brothers, John and Peter Nowey.

Calling hours will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Delhi, with Father Michael Flannery celebrant.

Burial will take place in the spring in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Doris A. McRedmond

DELHI — Doris A. McRedmond, 73, a lifelong resident of Delhi, passed away Friday afternoon, March 17, 2006, at home, surrounded by her family, after a short illness.

Doris was born in Delhi on Jan. 30, 1933, the daughter of the late Donald and Anna Close Cantwell.

She attended Delaware Academy and was a graduate of the Del Kader School of Beauty Culture, Elmira.

On Oct. 20, 1956, she married William McRedmond in Delhi.

Doris loved to tend to her gardens and make crafts with her granddaughters.

Doris worked first at the beauty shop at Bresee’s, Oneonta, and later was an operator at Delhi Telephone Company. Her main job was homemaker, lovingly taking care of her family.

Doris is survived by two sons, John McRedmond of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Robert McRedmond of Wilmington, Del.; three daughters, Carol O’Dowd and her husband, Thomas, Anna Mason and her husband, Michael, and Mary Rosa and her husband, Douglas, all of Delhi; eight grandchildren, Robert, Amber, Jeremiah, Michael, Micci, Taylor, Haley and Brandy; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Ayden; a sister, Evelyn Bedient, and her husband, William, of Delhi; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, William, who died Nov. 12, 2000; two brothers, Robert and Edward Cantwell; and one sister, Joan Tietjen.

A funeral service will be held at the United Ministries, Delhi, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman and the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will take place in Delhi Cemetery, where Doris and Bill will be interred together.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial contributions in Doris’ memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Maida Bernice Moorby

DELHI — Maida Bernice Moorby, 88, of Delhi, formerly of Oneonta, died March 19, 2006, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Born July 6, 1917, in Davenport Center, she was the daughter of the late Harlow and Elizabeth (Utter) Munson.

She married Albert A. Moorby on Aug. 14, 1938.

She worked at the Green Stamp store for a short time and then at her home.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and helped with the Cub Scouts. She loved dogs, camping and spending time with her grandchildren.

Maida is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy Moorby of West Davenport; her grandchildren, Katherine Kopf and her husband, Brian, of Asheboro, N.C., Christopher Moorby and his wife, Debra, of Davenport and Allen Moorby and his wife, Karen, of Delmar; a sister, Myrtle Rogers of Oneonta; four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Kyle Moorby and Cassandra and Alicia Kopf; her nieces, Jean Cox and Marilyn Boyea; a nephew, David Munson; her brother-in-law, LeRoy Moorby of Newark Valley; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred A. Moorby, in March 1996; and her son, Robert A. Moorby, in October 2000.

Family will receive friends at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006. A funeral service will be held immediately following the visiting at 5 p.m. with her nephew, Father William Moorby, officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Davenport Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Leatherstocking Region Office, The Meadows, Suite 2, 140 County Highway 33 West, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ida M. Grech

ONEONTA — Ida M. Grech, 85, died after a short illness at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta on Friday, March 17, 2006.

She was born to Lillian and Hans Rheinshagen in Ridgewood, N.J.

Mrs. Grech lived in Toms River, N.J., and Belleville, N.J., before moving to Oneonta, almost three years ago.

Mrs. Grech was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Belleville, N.J., and a faithful member of the Fewsmith Memorial Presbyterian Church, also in Belleville.

Mrs. Grech was predeceased by her three husbands, Lewis Vanderhoff in 1976, Anthony Manning and Lester Grech; and her brother, Fred Rheinshagen.

Mrs. Grech is survived by two daughters, Geraldine Ogden and her husband, Don, of Walton and Eileen Budine and her husband, Bob, of Davenport; one son, Ronald L. Vanderhoff and his wife, Kathryn, of Newton, N.J.; one sister, Lillian Sanford of Massachusetts; two brothers, Robert Rheinshagen of Florida and Ernie Rheinshagen of South Carolina; and cherished by seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at the F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, 1 Main St., Franklin, N.J. Interment to follow at North Hardyston Cemetery, Hardyston Twp., N.J.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Scott Michael Thayer

LAURENS — Scott Michael Thayer, 36, went to be with the Lord unexpectedly at his home March 17, 2006.

Born Sept. 12, 1969, in Oneonta, he was the son of George L. and Carol (Eckler) Thayer.

Scott worked at Monser Brothers Tire and Service as a tire changer.

He is survived by his parents, George L. and Carol L. Thayer of Otego; his son, Ryan Thayer of Laurens; his sisters, Andrea Silvernail and her husband, John, of Otego and Patricia Schreiber of Sidney; his brother, Daniel Thayer, of Otego; his nieces, Jennifer Atcher of Otego, Melissa Atcher of Oneonta, Samantha Schreiber of Otego and Lauren Hill of Gilbertsville; his nephew, Jaime Schreiber of Otego; aunt and uncle, Joyce and Jerry Ingraham of Brooksville, Fla.; and his good friends, Charlie Silvernail, Christopher Robertson, Carl Schreiber and Matt Knudsen. He is also survived by several cousins.

Family will receive friends at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Scott’s name to the Laurens Emergency Squad.

Esther S. Day

BAINBRIDGE — Esther S. Day, 90, formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, March 17, 2006, at Malta House in North Syracuse.

Esther was predeceased by her husband, Tracy C. Day, in 1981.

Esther’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by Doreen (Day) and Tom Armstrong of Baldwinsville, Dedra (Day) and Hank Phillips of Pottstown, Pa., Donna (Day) and Alexander Ratliff of East Syracuse; her much loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alexander Rexell Ratliff of Baltimore, Md., Rochelle, O.J., Onaja, Onaje and Baby Robinson of Frederick, Md., Traci, Scott, Andrew, Tyler and Genevieve Strobel of Wyomissing, Pa., and Amy, Matt, Phillip and Joshua Bornais of Birdsboro, Pa.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Calling hour will be from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service.

Burial will be at a later date.

The family will host an open house for friends and relatives honoring their mother and grandmother from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, at the home of Dorie and Tom Armstrong in Baldwinsville.

Henry ’Mike’ Simonds

UNADILLA — Henry "Mike" Simonds, 76, of Unadilla and Dade City, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 5, 2006, in Florida.

He was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Otego, to Robert Simonds and Mable (Dixon) Jones.

Mike was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was employed by DuPont in Richmond, Va., for 33 years.

He was a volunteer firefighter, avid reader, liked to travel and enjoyed his family and friends.

Mike is survived by his wife of 21 years, Janice Simonds, of Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and John Moore of Chesterfield, Va.; five stepchildren, Linda Welch of Delhi, Ann Daly of Pennsylvania, Kathy Eichhorn of Laurens, Barbara Gonzales of Unadilla, and Carl Harlow Jr. of North Carolina; brothers, Robert of Oneonta and Lynwood of Otego and a sister, Beverly Lambrecht in Sidney Center.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Van Hosen and Ruth Evans.

Funeral services are pending under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Beatrice L. Church

DAVENPORT — Beatrice L. Church, 88, of Davenport, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 8, 1917.

Arrangements are pending with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.
