She was born Feb. 26, 1947, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Earl S. Halaquist and the late Evelyn Pearson Halaquist.
She resided in Bainbridge the majority of her life. Many would remember her, sharing stories and her quick wit, while serving a cup of coffee, or the compassion shown while serving on the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.
She relocated to Winchester, Va., and expanded her education to enable her to take a position at Winchester Medical in the NICU, becoming a great contributor to that unit.
Elaine was a self-reliant, devoted mother who lived for her children and grandchildren, the joy of her life.
She loved nature, planting gardens, and caring for animals. She has touched many lives supporting and encouraging others even while battling her own illness. She will leave a large void in many lives but will never be forgotten.
She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Swartwout and Dale Bartell; son, Jason McCumber, all of Winchester, Va., son, Nathan and Tina McCumber of Florida; and was predeceased by her son, Christopher McCumber. Also surviving stepmother, Patricia Halaquist of Bainbridge; sisters and brother-in-law, Lee Jane Wheeler of Liverpool and Nancy and Duane Lowe of Mount Upton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Karen Halaquist of Windsor, Dennis and Terri Halaquist of Unadilla and Earl Halaquist Jr. of Sidney; grandchildren, Leah Swartwout, Brandon, Keegan, Dylan and Kinzie May McCumber, Laura Beach and Melissa Cummings; her former husband, Stanley McCumber Jr.; and Inez and Stanley McCumber Sr.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and Pumpkin.
She was also predeceased by her grandparents, Stanley and Jennie Elderkin Halaquist.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial gifts to the Winchester Medical NICU or Blue Ridge Hospice, both in Winchester, Va.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery at a later date.

James Frederick Powers MILFORD Mr. James Frederick Powers, 90, of Goey Pond Road West and formerly of Hinman Hollow Road in Milford, died Thursday afternoon, March 23, 2006, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Rudolph (Rudy) R. Timm LEAGUE CITY, Texas Rudolph (Rudy) R. Timm, 75, formerly of Conesville, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2006, at his home in League City, Texas.
Rudy was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Brooklyn, to Rudolph Sr. and Ethel (Tiney) Timm. After Ethel’s death, he was married to Elisabeth.
Rudy graduated from Gilboa-Conesville Central School.
He married Hilda Brand on May 31, 1953. She predeceased him in 1986. He married Anna Fish on Aug. 20, 1988.
Rudy was a decorated veteran of the United States Army, serving as sergeant during the Korean Conflict and after his tour of duty served as training officer for recruits in Troy.
Rudy worked for the Town of Conesville, Rehbein’s Automotive and the South Kortright Boy’s School. While at the Boy’s School he formed the Drum Corps, which participated in local parades. He also worked at the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher and most recently worked at the New York State Power Authority as a safety officer until his retirement.
He served his community as a Conesville volunteer fireman, fire commissioner and was on the Town Counsel.
He was a member of the Legion, was a Mason and was a member of the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Tactical Force.
Rudy enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and "tinkering." His family fondly remembers him spending hours in his garage "Re-inventing the wheel."
He is survived by his wife, Anna; two daughters, one son and three grandchildren, Candace and Frank Liberati of Oneonta, Holly and Paul Tubiolo and children Renee and Christopher, of Conesville, and Randall and Helen Timm and daughter Lindsay of Conesville; also three stepchildren, their spouses and five stepgrandchildren, William and Bridget (Fish) Graves of Oneonta, Timothy and Brigitte Fish and their children, Benjamin and Noelle, of Syracuse, and Steven and Amanda (Fish) Alger, and their children, Sarah, Kyle and Cody, of Mount Vision.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006, at the funeral home with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating.
Burial will be in Manorkill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice Association of America.

James ’Jim’ D. Callahan PRINCETON, N.J. James "Jim" D. Callahan, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of March 21, 2006.
He was born April 1, 1920, in Utica, the son of Worthy and Mary Callahan of Cooperstown.
He served in the Pacific Theatre in the United States Navy during World War II, and later graduated from Springfield College.
He spent his professional career as teacher and coach at Springfield Central School, where he worked for more than 30 years, and he spent his retirement years playing golf and gardening in South Carolina.
He was married to Madeleine Byers in 1946, who predeceased him in 1996. Following the death of his wife, he moved to Richmond, Va., and later to Princeton, N.J., to be close to his daughter.
"Jim" was an avid lover of the outdoors and devoted sportsman, and was most at home hunting, fishing and hiking in his native Fly Creek Valley.
He was known to all as a kind man with a gentle spirit, and will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan of Milford and Patty of Princeton, N.J.; one son, Peter of Poulsbo, Wash.; and seven grandchildren, Josh, Calla, Nicholas, Jessica, Benjamin, Sawyer and Emma.
Arrangements are under the direction of The Kimble Funeral Home, and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Fly Creek.

Esther Davis MARYLAND A graveside committal service for Esther Davis, who died Jan. 2, 2006, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2006, in the Schenevus Cemetery, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Stephen Fournier officiating.
The Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St. in Schenevus is serving the family.
James L. Robinson WALTON James L. Robinson, 85, went to be with the Lord peacefully on March 22, 2006, at Delaware Valley Hospital after a long illness.
He was born to Murray and Frederica Robinson in Walton on Oct. 11, 1920.
He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 53 years, Jeanette Holley Robinson; also son-in-law, Dudley Stephens.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Allen Robinson, who meticulously cared for him over the last few years. Also survived by his children, John A. Robinson and Arlene Bradtke of Walton, Gail McNee and husband Jeff of Walton, Mary Eggelton and husband Frank of Walton, and Linda Yawn and Shawn Edwards of Douglasville, Ga.; grandchildren, Michael Doig and wife Raquel of Walton, Casey McNee of Walton, Daniel Stephens of Candler, N.C., Stephanie Wheeler and husband Chris of Walton, Kristina McAteer and husband Vincent of Warwick, R.I., Justin and Jarred Robinson of Walton, Jessica and Joel Yawn of Douglasville, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Chelsey and Courtney Wheeler, Kyle and Grace Doig, Ty Robinson and Lucas Robinson; brother, Herbert and wife Wanita of Norwich; sister, Alice Perley and husband Richard of Florida.
Jim was a member of the First Congregational Church of Walton.
He served in World War II in the field artillery division of the Army and was honorably discharged Nov. 21, 1945, to be with his wife and start his family.
He loved his four children dearly and got much enjoyment from them. Jim was a hardworking man, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He ran the family business of real estate and insurance, which his father Murray Robinson had started in 1908, for more than 30 years.
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying maple sugaring, fishing, hunting, having picnics at his camp, with his family, and he also enjoyed logging their property with the help of his brother, Herb.
In his younger years, he enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson. In more recent years, he enjoyed aviation through flying his own plane.
As per his request, he would like to invite friends to join the family at a graveside service, at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006, in the Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Jennifer Matison Juliano officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the First Congregational Church, 4 Mead St., Walton, or the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13838.
