James Frederick Powers
MILFORD — Mr. James Frederick Powers, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday afternoon, March 23, 2006, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He was 90 years old.Fred, as he was known by friends and family, was born in the family home in Milford on July 12, 1915, a son of Michael and Josephine (Moore) Powers. At age 11, growing up on the Hinman Hollow Road, he began keeping bees. This was done during "the hard times" to provide a sugar source for the family, but became a hobby that would continue throughout his life. Upon graduating from Milford High School, he was employed for many years on the family dairy farm.On Aug. 18, 1949, he married Nina Mary Jenks at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Together, Fred and Nina operated the dairy farm and raised their family of nine children. During this time, he was a member of the Hinman Hollow Grange, the DairyLea Co-op, and was particularly proud of his Registered Ayrshires.During the years that the Woodland Museum was in operation on the Busch estate, he was employed as the train engineer and took great delight in driving visitors throughout the grounds, In later years, Fred was employed as a machinist for the former Lyncoach in Oneonta and took great pride in his problem- solving abilities and welding skill.Fred enjoyed many hobbies and interests throughout his life. He built his own sailboat, "The Colleen," and enjoyed sailing on Arnold Lake. Fred also enjoyed hunting and was an enthusiastic trout fisherman, spending many afternoons fishing local streams with his Nina.He was an avid photographer, and, in his 70s, began submitting his photographs to many area shows and won several awards. He always enjoyed visiting with the patrons and other members of the market. In 1983, Fred and Nina moved from the farm to a log cabin that he built with his own two hands, using trees that he had planted at the age of 12. Turning those trees into logs and lumber, Fred built their new house, demonstrating his trait of being very particular in all that he did, as well as his characteristic attention to detail and desire to have everything done just right.Fred and Nina were especially happy during their retirement years in their cabin, with their animals, hobbies, and surrounded by family and friends.A devoted Catholic, Fred was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, and a devotee of the Rosary.Fred took great pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He maintained an easy ability to relate to children. Having grown up in the Depression without the opportunity to go to college, he was immensely proud that all nine of his children attended and graduated from college.Fred is survived by five daughters, Kathleen Stiefel of Milford, Mary Ellen and Wayne Grandner of Port Jefferson Station, Dr. Susan Powers and John Glaser of Gaithersburg, Md., Rosemary Powers of Milford, Teresa Konopka of Hartwick; four sons, James Powers and Dr. Pam Powers of South New Berlin, Dr. Michael Powers and Dr. Lucy Jones of Hartwick, Timothy and Cindy Powers of West Winfield, and Daniel Powers and Cynthia Wiegel of Milford; his grandchildren, Darcy Dibble of Hartwick, Scott Dibble of Oneonta, Brienna Stiefel of Milford, Kristin Grandner of London, England, Courtney and James Grandner of Ithaca, Nate Grandner of Port Jefferson Station, Andrew Powers of Brooklyn, Ellyse and Alexis Powers of South New Berlin, Taylor, Olivia and Vaughan Powers of Hartwick, Benjamin, Hannah and Michael Glaser of Gaithersburg, Md., Brett, Sarah, Jessica and Adam Powers of West Winfield, Amanda and Gideon Powers of Milford and Helen Konopka of Hartwick; three great-grandchildren, Tim, Abbey and Tess Clapper of Hartwick; one brother, William S.
