Kathryn ’Sis’ Murray
ONEONTA Kathryn "Sis" Murray passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 18, 2006, in Oneonta, exactly 89 years after she was baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Valatie on March 18, 1917.
Born on Jan. 20, 1917, in a farmhouse on Eichybush Road in Stuyvesant, she was the youngest of six surviving children of Richard H. and Mary C. (Stickles) Carney.
A 1935 graduate of Martin H. Glynn High School in Valatie, she married James F. Murray on Oct. 16, 1943, and resided on Albany Avenue in Valatie from 1948 until 2004. Although James passed away June 28, 1976, Kathryn continued to run the Murray Agency, an insurance business he had started in 1960, on Main Street in Valatie until it was sold in 1986.
Kathryn is survived by her sons and their wives, Richard and Sara Murray of Charlottesville, Va., and Kevin and Roxanne Murray of Cooperstown. In addition, she has five grandchildren, Denise E. Poole and her husband, Britt, of Richmond, Va., Patrick H. Murray, currently serving as a Marine officer in Iraq, Lucas H. Murray and his wife, Dawn, of Boston, Mass., Colin Murray of Neptune Beach, Fla., and Liam J, Murray of Cooperstown.
She was predeceased by all of her brothers, John, Richard, Donald and George Carney; and her sister, Loretta Hanley. She remembered and talked about all of them every day.
Kathryn was a ferocious conversationalist. Many of her clients knew that walking into her office would take more than a few minutes. Often there was a cat or two on the desks, but there was never any question about her dedication to her clients or her family.
She loved yard work. Pity the leaf that fell into her yard or the weed that attempted to invade her patio. Often her rake could be heard long after sunset.
In the tradition of her family there was no piece of furniture too broken to be denied residence in her basement. Brooms worn down to various stages of nubishness enjoyed honored status on her porch, each having a special function to perform. It is no wonder her favorite saying was "Waste not, want not."
She loved sports, and it was not uncommon for her to have one game on the television and another on the radio.
She enjoyed life on her own terms and by her own standards and was thankful every day for her good health and good fortune.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 23, 2006, at St. John the Baptist Church in Valatie.
Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery.
