Mr. Suurhans was a merchant seaman and a master carpenter. A true lover and patron of the arts, he was a supporter of the Glimmerglass Opera, the Orpheus Theatre and the Fenimore Art Museum. He attended countless concerts and shows in the area. He was a member of Estonian Societies in Schenectady and New York City. After retirement, he became an accomplished marquetrist (wood inlays) and a fine land and seascape artist. He was an avid reader, photographer and gardener/landscaper.
Mr. Suurhans was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and is survived by his daughter and her husband, Maaja and Jonathan Secon; a granddaughter, Manina; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Lutheran Church, officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the funeral when the family will be in attendance.
Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery later this spring.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Elaine S. Short
BAINBRIDGE Elaine S. Short, 66, of Valley View Road in Bainbridge, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Binghamton General Hospital.
She was born June 21, 1939, daughter of the late Horace and Erma (Cuyle) Sowles in Sand Hill. Elaine graduated from Unadilla Central School in 1958. She married John Short on July 27, 1958, in Sand Hill. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.
She is survived by her husband, John Short, of Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, David and Melinda Short of Unadilla; two grandchildren, Paula and Kevin Short; sister, Ellen Smith of Pittsfield; Brother and sister law, Lloyd and Barbara Sowles of Bainbridge; aunt, Florence Cook of Johnson City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 10, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. David Masland of the United Methodist Church in Sidney officiating.
Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Elaine’s name to the Sidney Emergency Squad or the United Methodist Church of Sidney Memorial fund.

Agnes Hilda Morton
COOPERSTOWN Mrs. Agnes Hilda Morton, 96, passed away Friday, April 7, 2006, at Otsego Manor surrounded by her family and loving caregivers.
She was born March 29, 1910, in Kildare, County Kildare, Ireland, the daughter of William and Christina Eva (Fagan) Ryan. She married Norman Morton on Jan. 21, 1930, in Jamaica, Long Island.
She worked as a clerk at Metropolitan Life Insurance, 1 Madison Ave., New York City. Agnes and her husband operated the Middlefield General Store and the Corner Store in Cherry Valley and had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Cherry Valley.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy; nieces Eileen Ferris, Virginia Dieterle, Anne Ryan; nephews William T. Ryan and his wife Pamela, Ted Older, John Older, all in the United States; and nieces and a nephew in Sheffield, England.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, on Jan. 13, 1973; two sisters, Mary Older and Cecelia Keough; three brothers, William Ryan, John Ryan, Harold Ryan; and one niece, Kathleen Ryan.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 10, in St. Mary’s R. C. Church, Elm Street, Cooperstown, with Fr. John Rosson officiating.
Burial will take place in the Cherry Valley Cemetery in the spring.
There will be no public calling hours.
Contributions in lieu of flowers in Mrs. Morton’s memory may be made to the Star Haven Activities Fund at Otsego Manor and the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

WALTON Albert C. "Al" Pomeroy, 87, passed away Friday afternoon, April 7, 2006, after a long illness.
