Gladys Mae Eldred

She was born on April 26, 1937, in the Town of Russia, the daughter of Robert George and Florence Irene (Mykel) Rood Sr.

On May 27, 1967, Gladys married Raymond Y. Eldred in Morris. Mr. Eldred predeceased her on Aug. 1, 1984.

A lifelong area resident, Gladys had worked with her husband, Ray, on the family farm. She enjoyed country music, knitting and crocheting, tending to her plants and garden, but most of all spending time with her family.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Christine Eldred and Gary Heller of Morris; her mother, Florence Irene Rood of Hartwick; four sisters, Ruth Turnbull of Edmeston, Patricia and Frederick DeForest of West Edmeston, Dorothy and Roy Robert of Oneonta and Mary and John Bush of Hartwick; a half sister, Betty and Walter Ketchum of Tully; four brothers, Lawrence and Rita Rood of Mount Vision, Arthur William Rood of Oneonta, Edward and Linda Rood of Hartwick and Mykel and Deborah Rood of West Burlington; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Robert George Rood Sr., and her brother, Robert George Rood Jr.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Laverne Saxer officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 17.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Gerald E. Lull

ONEONTA — Gerald E. Lull, 75, of Oneonta, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2006, in Florida, after a long illness.

He was born June 16, 1930, in White Sulphur Springs, the son of Jay M. and Madolin L. (Everett) Lull.

Gerald was a graduate of Cornell University.

On Jan. 29, 1955, Gerald married Margaretha Anltenhofen; together they shared 51 years of marriage.

Gerald owned and operated a dairy farm on the back Laurens road. Today, his sons run the farm.

He was a member of the Laurens Planning Board, the Board of Assessment Review, and was an Agway Committee Man.

Gerald loved spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters. He will be deeply missed.

Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Margaretha M. Lull; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary R. and Karen Lull of Laurens, Jerome J. Lull of Laurens and Douglas M. and Connie Lull of Westford; two granddaughters, Madolin and Mariah Lull of Norwich; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Francella Stepp of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Laurens, and Lorraine and Jack Reed of West Oneonta; one brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Phyllis Lull of Zephyrhills, Fla. and Laurens; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2006, in the Laurens Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Burial will follow in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Laurens Presbyterian Church, Laurens, NY 13796 or to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens, NY 13796, in loving memory of Gerald E. Lull.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Irene Sutliff

ONEONTA — Irene Tooley Sutliff, 80, of Oneonta, formerly of East Meredith, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 13, 2006, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Born Nov. 1, 1925, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Pearl (Turp) Tooley.

She married Charles G. Sutliff on Sept. 23, 1947, in Milford.

Irene worked as a dress presser for Oneonta Dress Company. She was a member of the CB Club, Sixth Ward Club and Ladies of the Moose. She loved to sew and cook.

Irene is survived by her children, Mary Jester of Davenport, Edna Copenhaver and her husband, Fred, of East Meredith, Charles Sutliff Jr. and his wife, Clara, of Oneonta, Paul Sutliff and his wife, Jamie, of Sidney, and Leonard Sutliff of Oneonta; her sisters, Pauline Tooley of Warnerville and Mildred Hennigen of Waterloo; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles G. Sutliff, in 1995, and a sister, Anna Cavanaugh.

Family will receive friends at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, April 17. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert and Shirley Goerlich

UNADILLA — The lives of Robert Frank Goerlich and Shirley Boyce Goerlich were taken on Thursday, April 6, 2006, at their winter home in Port Orange, Fla.

Bob Goerlich was born March 4, 1936, in Newark, N.J., to Mary and Adolf Goerlich.

Bob grew up in Union, N.J. He left Union to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University. Following college, he joined the United States Army. Among his responsibilities in the Army, Bob served as Chief of Protocol in Fort Hamilton. In that capacity, he arranged and coordinated activities for visiting foreign dignitaries and ambassadors to the United Nations. Bob served his country in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other commendations. He retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. After earning his master’s degree from American University, Bob joined Singer Link in Kirkwood, where he worked in public communications. In 1988, he was appointed to the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council by then-Governor Mario Cuomo.

An avid golfer, he was an active member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed community service activities and, above all, spending time with his grandchildren.

Shirley Goerlich was born Shirley Alice Boyce on May 17, 1937, to John and Nella Boyce. She grew up in Sidney. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Cobleskill College, and pursued her master’s degree at Parsons College in Iowa. Shirley was a public schoolteacher in Milwaukee, Wis., and Huntington, Long Island.

She is best-known as owner of RSG Publishing Company, a company she successfully operated for 22 years. Her many books include "At Rest in Unadilla," "Etched in Stone in Sidney," "Legends and Reality," "The Civil War Soldiers of Prospect Hill," and the award-winning "Genealogy: A Practical Research Guide," among others.

Shirley was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Society of New England Women and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. She was a founding mother of the General John Patterson Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution memorialized in Whitney Point. She was a well-known and respected genealogist, local historian, author, and friend.

Bob and Shirley are survived by two sons, Robert John Goerlich of Cortland, and Daniel Lee Goerlich of Nathalie, Va.; four grandchildren, Robert Christopher, Danielle Marie, Jonathan Winfield, and Andrew Read. Shirley is survived by her sister, Beverly Pierce, of Sidney, and her brother, Jon W. Boyce, of Guilford. Bob is survived by his brother, Donald Goerlich, of Henrietta. The couple is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, April 18, from 3 to 5 and again from 6 until 8 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, where Bob and Shirley were married on Aug. 19, 1967. They will be laid to rest in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla following the Mass.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice, in memory of Bob and Shirley Goerlich.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the supervision of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

John Arthur Pope

SIDNEY — John Arthur Pope, of River Street in Sidney, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006.

He was born with his twin sister, Mary Francis, on June 22, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., to Arthur and Jennifer M. Pope.

He was raised in the New York City area, and when he was 17, joined the United States Army. He spent 20 years of his life in the Army and served during World War II and the Korean War. He received over 40 medals including four Purple Hearts for injuries received in combat.

His career also allowed him to travel all over the world including Okinawa, Japan, the Phillipines and Italy. He became fluent in Italian, and the four years he spent in Trieste were some of the happiest of his whole life.

He retired from the military in 1963 and because of the GI Bill was able to attend New York University and Columbia University.

He then became the owner of the Maltese Falcon Store on Columbus Avenue in New York City, where he sold used furniture, clothing and antiques.

In 1970, he married Susan Bilton and in 1976, they purchased the house on River Street in Sidney. He spent the rest of his life trying to restore the inside of the house and had a real appreciation for Victorian architecture.

John spent years at auctions, flea markets and antiques stores, buying and selling antiques and collectibles. He had a great love of history, was a fanatic about trains, had a passion for growing flowers all over his yard, loved reading books and magazines and spent his last hours on the Earth listening to his favorite jazz songs.

John will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and the way he always stood up for what he believed was right. He never thought twice about helping a friend in need and always offered his advice and a shoulder to cry on. He had a tremendous spirit and a unique sense of humor that could make an entire room full of people listen to his every word.

John always believed in volunteering and donating to charities and was a member of the National Democratic Committee, the Sierra Club, WSKG PBS station in Binghamton, the National Humane Society, the National Model Railroaders Association, the Leatherstocking Railway Society, the Veterans Of Foreign Wars, the 96th Infantry Division, the Loyal Order of the Purple Heart and his beloved Disabled American Veterans Post in Oneonta.

John was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Jean and Irene Pope; and his loving wife, Susan Bilton Pope.

He leaves behind his son, John and Barbara Pope; his daughter, Christina and Rob Bargher; and his grandchildren, Rebecca, Frank, Gerald and Elizabeth; along with several great-grandchildren. John also leaves behind several incredible friends who did so many things to fill his life with laughter and love.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to all of the people who stood by John during sickness and health. Thank you to those who were lifelong true friends and even those who met him more recently but have done all they could to fill his days with joy and happiness. May the memories that you have shared never be far from your hearts.

Special thanks to the Sidney Fire Department for its incredible care during all of his emergencies and to the Sidney Police Department, Troop C and attorney Frederick Neroni for making sure that John’s wishes are being honored, even in death.

A memorial service will be scheduled in Sidney to honor John’s memory at a later date.

He will be interred in the Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care of the Joyce Funeral Home, Unadilla, and the family would like to thank them for their wonderful friendship to John while he was alive.
