Eddie George Chamberlin

SOUTH HARTWICK — Eddie George Chamberlin, 86, of South Hartwick, died after a long illness Wednesday night, April 12, 2006, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born July 19, 1919, in the town of Westford, a son of Guy and Fawn (Burnside) Chamberlin.

In his youth, Eddie graduated from the Maryland Union School and later attended the Andrew S. Draper School in Schenevus.

On June 26, 1946, Eddie married Eva Grace Martin in the parsonage of the Milford Methodist Church. In 1951, the Chamberlins purchased a house in South Hartwick that they fixed up over time and continued to live in to the present. Eddie spent many hours making repairs to and fastidiously maintaining their house, and often commented on how it truly was the only "home" he ever had.

For 38 years, he was employed as an automobile mechanic for Oneonta Sales until retiring in 1982. Customers would request his services because they respected his honesty, experience, skills and persistence with difficult car repairs. During the 1950s, he was also employed for a brief time at the Scintilla Plant in Sidney.

A member for over 50 years of Westville Grange No. 540, he was also a member of the New York State Historical Association, the Hartwick Historical Society, and attended the Hartwick United Methodist Church.

A selfless man, Eddie led a life devoted to his family, neighbors and friends. He is remembered by his wife and daughters for always working hard at being a good husband and father, and that anything he did always involved the whole family. He rarely did things for himself, but felt more comfortable doing good deeds for others, such as repairing broken machines, fixing cars, tuning engines, and plowing snow in the early-morning hours for his neighbors.

It was especially hard for him in later years when he had to have others do jobs around his house that he had always attended to. Just recently, he joked with his family that he was threatening to get out the ladder himself and fix the roof.

A neat and meticulous man, he loved spending time in his workshop, where tools were always arranged "just so," and were always clean and well-oiled. Having been born and raised in an era when you fixed what was broken, and made do with what you had, he was especially talented at fixing just about anything laid before him, and always had several projects in various states of repairs, neatly laid out in his workshop.

Eddie will also be remembered for possessing a great sense of humor, his ability to recall and tell jokes and to make people laugh. In the same vein, neighborhood kids fondly recall the time in the 1960s that he created a "doodlebug" out of an old truck to use around the property instead of getting a tractor.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eva, of South Hartwick; two daughters, Mary Eloise Bowser, and her husband, Barry Lee Bowser of Middletown, Va., and Marcia Emily Chamberlin of Harrisonburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Bryan Edward and Brooke Allison Bowser; siblings-in-law, Homer, Leila, Peter and Dorothy Martin; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marcia Schippitsch, who died Jan. 22, 1998.

A memorial service will be offered at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in the Hartwick United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Stackhouse, pastor, officiating. Immediately following the service, Eddie’s family will receive friends downstairs in the church hall.

The Service of Committal and Burial will be private in Hartwick Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348, the Hartwick United Methodist Church, PO Box 576, Hartwick, NY 13348, or the Hartwick Historical Society, PO Box 1, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
