Foundation awards grants to local students
The Cooperstown Community Foundation has awarded five one-time grants to area students to aid with their college educations.
Established in 1960 by Dr. Francis F. Harrison and his wife, Carlotta C. Harrison, the Foundation annually awards scholarships to members of the Cooperstown Central School graduating class who intend to pursue further vocational education or training, usually in a two-year program.
Recipients of the $1,000 awards are Eric Coe of Fly Creek, who will study criminal justice at Tompkins Cortland Community College; Jason Conklin of Cooperstown, who will attend the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill in pursuit of a career in sports management; Allison Jodway of Cooperstown, who plans to study elementary education at Tompkins Cortland Community College; Andrianna Lyons of Fly Creek, who will undertake a course in graphic design at SUNY Cobleskill; and Landry Rubino of Mount Vision, who plans to study veterinary science at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.
In the past, CCF has also supported the activities of such organizations as the LaCava Nature Center, the Otsego County Conservation Association and adventure-based educational programs at Cooperstown Central School.
Cooperstown seniors interested in pursuing vocational training after graduation are invited to apply for financial assistance in the spring through the CCS guidance department. A brief essay and two recommendations, at least one from a teacher, are also required.
The Cooperstown Community Foundation is chartered by New York state as a not-for-profit organization and is happy to accept donations from members of the public. Those interested in supporting the Foundation’s mission may contact Gary Kuch, president, for more information, or send contributions to treasurer Dr. Douglas Cannon, 24 Nelson Ave., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
