Livestock auction nets $12,000+
The annual Otsego County youth livestock auction was held in Morris on Saturday, Aug. 4. Twenty animals of four different species were sold: six steers, three lambs, eight market hogs and three Boer goats. Ten buyers supported the children through the sale.

Hop Pickers’ Picnic to be Saturday
The Farmers’ Museum will present Hop Pickers’ Picnic, an evening of hand-crafted and micro-brewed beer sampling, live music, food, hop picking and hops-related demonstrations, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, in celebration of the hops harvest.
Fly Creek to feature sales, antique engines
The Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard will host its 13th annual Antique Engine Show from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Single-cylinder gas engine enthusiasts from the region will join together to display their prized antiques from the early 1900s. The show will also feature the mill’s own collection of vintage equipment.

to read at open mike
On Thursday, Word Thursdays will present fiction writer Theodore Pelton, a former resident of Hamden now living in Buffalo, and puppeteer and playright Sally Fisher, who lives in Manhattan and West Delhi. The event will begin with an open reading at 7 p.m., during which all those present are invited to read their own work or that of another writer for up to five minutes, followed by the features.

’Crosspollinations’ to debut Aug. 25
Far Fields will present the inaugural event of its "Crosspollinations" series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. The event will look at how real life and legend intersect between two famous horses and the people connected with them. Jane Schwartz, author of "Ruffian: Burning From The Start," and storyteller Margot Farrington will explore how real-life events gain the status of myth, and discuss the similarities between Ruffian and the "Black Horse" of Celtic myth.

NYSHA exhibit details Cooperstown’s history
An exhibit celebrating the bicentennial of the incorporation of the village of Cooperstown in 1807 opened Thursday at the New York State Historical Association Research Library. The exhibit, "Cooperstown, 1807-2007, in Images and Documents," features maps, historical photography, ephemera, county records and manuscripts drawn from the library’s permanent collection that offer insight into Cooperstown’s history.

Golf tourney nets thousands for Bassett
On Tuesday, May 29, the 10th annual KeyBank/Bassett Invitational took place at The Otesaga Hotel’s Leatherstocking Golf Course. The sold-out benefit netted more than $100,000, organizers said. Proceeds from the Invitational were designated to the Friends of Bassett’s Annual Fund, which helps strengthen Bassett Healthcare’s regional initiatives across its eight-county service area.

to open Saturday
The Unadilla Historical Museum at 131 Main St. in Unadilla will reopen to the public Saturday for the 2007 summer season. Museum hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Conference looks at state’s rural issues
On Thursday, April 5, more than 130 community officials attended the second Rural Issues Community Leadership Conference at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. The conference, which was sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Leatherstocking Agricultural Region and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, attracted town supervisors, planning board members, local lawyers, legislators, highway superintendents, economic developers and agricultural advocates. In all, 10 central New York counties were represented.

Rural issues conference to be held at Otesaga
The Mohawk Valley Leatherstocking Agricultural Region will host the second Rural Issues Community Leadership Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the The Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. The special Keynote Speaker will be Patrick L. Hooker of Richfield Springs, the newly appointed commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Recently I read one of their reports showing how Americans have been relocating throughout the U.S. During the years 2000-04, the top three states that people moved to were Florida, Arizona and Nevada. The first two were no surprise to me. Florida averaged 191,000 new residents each year.

After 30 years of teaching and choreographing, Wendy Wade-Sullivan isn’t quite ready to hang up her dance shoes, "but I will have a new boss," she said with a laugh. Wade was born into dancing _ she is both the daughter and mother of dancers and cannot remember a time in her life when she couldn’t dance. Throughout her 30 years of teaching, she has touched the lives of many Oneonta families, tutoring their children in the arts and embracing the world of dance.

Science Olympiad team to go to state tourney
The Roxbury Central School Junior High Science Olympiad team competed in the Capital District Regional Tournament at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Middle School in Ravena on March 3, winning the third-place trophy.
Program to look at Christmas-tree growing
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will offer a four-day program on Christmas-tree production at the Education Resource Center on state Highway 10 in Hamden. The program, scheduled for March 20-23, is an opportunity for experienced growers to improve their skills and for new growers wanting to learn the basics of growing Christmas trees. It is sponsored by a grant from the New York State Agricultural Workforce Training program. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.each day, with sign-in at 8:30 a.m.

Watershed summit a success, organizers say
With close to 120 people in attendance, the Schoharie Watershed Water Quality Summit, held Jan. 27 in the village of Hunter, accomplished its primary objective, officials said. Tax help available for Chenango residents
The Chenango County United Way announced that this week, United Ways across New York state will kick off this year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA. Throughout the tax season, VITA sites prepare income tax returns for working families, individuals and elderly and disabled citizens. Staffed by IRS-trained volunteers, these sites ensure free assistance, offering working families the opportunity to receive the full value of their state and federal tax credits and refunds.

The holidays give rise to many social events that revolve around food and celebration. More than 20 people have helped raise about $1,000 for the recent Memory Walk in Unadilla to benefit the Leatherstocking Regional Office of the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York. SUCO center to present film series on Africa
The Center for Multicultural Experiences and the Africana and Latino Studies Department at the State University College at Oneonta will sponsor a film series on Africa beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m. Four films will be shown in the series, all of which will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Center for Multicultural Experiences in Lee Hall. Admission to the films is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.
Focus to be local at Oneonta Market
This Saturday the Oneonta Farmers’ Market will join Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program in promoting New York potatoes. There will be free samples and visitors will have the chance to vote on New York’s best-tasting potato. SUCO professor to receive Spiritual Leadership award
Distinguished Teaching Professor Ashok K. Malhotra of the philosophy department at the State University College at Oneonta has been named a recipient of the 2006 Spiritual Leadership Award by the Friends of the Religious Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Malhotra will receive the award, presented in recognition of his work in building schools for the underprivileged in India, at a dinner at the Southern Illinois University’s Religious Center on Sept. 16.

The Landis Arboretum will host its fall plant, book and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There is no charge for admission, and parking is free. The sale will take place rain or shine. The Arboretum cannot set aside or sell offerings in advance of the sale.

Library Corner: The Great Depression
Joseph Fioravanti will present a program on "The Great Depression" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Huntington Memorial Library. He will give a quick tour of the "Desperate Thirties" in America, a decade that shaped a generation. The lecture will cover topics such as Hoovervilles, soup kitchens, gangsters, the New Deal, "Golden Age" of radio, famous personalities and architectural feats of the day, among others.
St. Mary’s festival taking shape
Earlier this year, Father Joseph Benintende suggested that St. Mary’s School should host a festival. A group of people then met with him to form St. Mary’s Fund Raising Committee. The committee formed in late April and began a brainstorming process of what would be needed to have a successful festival.

New degree offered at SUNYCobleskill
The state’s first bachelor’s degree program in agricultural biotechnology was recently approved at the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill. The college will begin offering the program immediately, following its recent approval by the state Board of Regents, Gov. George Pataki and the SUNY Board of Trustees. The program is one of only three agricultural biotechnology degrees in the country, college officials said.

Schoharie County revives Ambassador Program
The Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee has revived its Ambassador Program to assist area tourism businesses with cross-promotion and to help ensure that the employees of area attractions are familiar with the other properties in the county. Employees of participating ambassador businesses that are tourism-related will be encouraged to visit other businesses where they will receive a tour of the property and the opportunity to learn about what the visitor’s experience will be like.

Benefit swim to aid Healing Arts programs

Library Corner: Hook Up
The phrase "hook up" has an interesting history. Traditionally, it has meant to connect or fit together, as in "the company sent a man to hook up the washing machine." In the early 20th century, the phrase was slang for meeting someone as in "I’ll hook up with you at the grocer’s." It was also slang for "get married" at that time.
Library volunteers recognized for service
For the third year in a row, the Roxbury Library Association has been assisted by the volunteer services of AmeriCorps Program student interns. During June, July and August, State University College at Fredonia rising sophomore Chryste Springman and Roxbury Central School 2006 graduate Tammy Schaaffe have worked with Roxbury Library Director Dian Seiler, Roxbury Library Assistant Director Alice Iacovelli and the Roxbury Library Association Board of Trustees. The volunteers assisted with all major aspects of library management, especially the processing and the displaying of new book acquisitions, organizers said.
Kiwanis to bring circus to Delhi for Labor Day
Labor Day, Sept. 4, will see the return of The Carson and Barnes Great American Circus to Delhi. This big-top circus features a tent the size of a football field with three rings of continuous action by more than 100 performers, presenters said, and is the largest tent circus in the nation.

You may have heard someone with arthritis or damaged joints say, "I can feel a storm coming." Researchers set out to find if that was really true. Volunteers with arthritis were placed in isolated rooms where the atmospheric conditions could be regulated. When the pressure fell and the humidity rose, the participants complained of pain in their joints. Examinations showed their joints were really inflamed. It isn’t known how or why this happens, but it is known that changes in air pressure and humidity do affect joints and is accepted. Many people I know make this comment when a storm is coming.

Annual junior livestock show to start Sunday
The Farmers’ Museum will host the 59th annual Junior Livestock Show from Sunday through Tuesday at Iroquois Farm on River Road, county Route 33, in Cooperstown. The event brings together the area’s best livestock and youth exhibitors from a nine-county region. More than 300 youth handlers and 750 animals are expected to participate. Admission to the show grounds is free, and the public is welcome to attend.
Benefit museum gala to take theme of an old-time fair

Butternut Valley Grange in Gilbertsville recently presented checks of $300 each to the Butternuts Cemetery Association, the local food pantry and the Grange’s Caring Neighbors fund. The money was raised at a recent public dinner. Douglas Tobey, president of the cemetery association, and Susan Botzow, coordinator of the Food Pantry, spoke briefly about the workings and the needs of their respective organizations.

Stories to be told, books signed at Word Thursdays
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Word Thursdays will present Windsor poet Christine Gelineau and Oneonta storyteller Bill Swain. Gelineau will read from her new book and sign copies, and Swain will tell stories after the open session, during which all attending are invited to read up to five minutes from their own work or that of others.
Bassett golf tourney nets $100,000 despite rain
The ninth annual KeyBank Bassett Invitational drew 140 participants for a day of golf Tuesday, May 30, until the tournament was cut short due to rain. This was the first time in its history that the Invitational was rained out, officials said. Because winners could not be determined by scores, prizes were individually drawn in a raffle at the post-event awards ceremony at The Otesaga.

Library Corner Powder Horns
I recently read an article on powder horns, which was fascinating. During Colonial times, horns were plentiful and were used to make many different things. It was the precursor of plastic. Cattle were everywhere, and almost everyone owned a cow. Horns were used to make combs, shoehorns, whistles, spoons, buttons, sewing products, sausage funnels, bowls and other dishes and much more. The rich often disdained horns, and would use other, more-expensive material if possible.

Brookwood summer program registration under way
An 11-week summer program for children ages 3 to 14 will be available to all families in the area beginning Monday at the Brookwood School in Toddsville, south of Cooperstown. The program is offered every weekday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Families may sign up for any hours, days or weeks they would like their children to attend. Children are divided into several separate age groups for most of the daily activities, each with two teachers.

Fishing, food and flowers to be at Celebration event
A full day of events is planned for Saturday’s Cobleskill Celebration, organizers said, beginning with the Cobleskill Eagles’ Take a Kid Fishing Day in Centre Park. When we hear the phrase "staff of life," we have been taught to think of wheat. Archaeologists in Mexico disagree, thinking now that corn deserves that role. They’ve discovered fossilized grains of corn pollen, which are believed to be more than 60,000 years old. The Pueblo Indians, in ancient times, honored corn as well. They considered it to be the fifth element along with earth, air, fire and water.

Library Corner Happy Easter
One of the really great things about the Internet is the ease of looking up answers to questions. For example, if you need to know how to say, "Happy Easter" in another language, the New York Public Library has on its website a page called, "Useful Expressions and Greetings in 26 Languages." It took me less than five seconds to look this up. In years gone by, when someone asked that question, I had to hope we had the particular foreign language dictionary for the language the person wanted, and then hope it had expressions, not just words. The Internet certainly has changed the way and the time spent finding answers.

The DuBoises have been interested in nature photography for more than 15 years and have taken more than 20,000 images worldwide. Their photos have been published in a number of regional and national magazines and calendars. Proper care can help keep area bluebirds prosperous
Driving around the backwoods of Springfield the other day, I saw a flash of blue. In fact, it wasn’t just one flash, but four bright blue birds that flew past my car and landed in nearby trees. Stopping the car and grabbing my binoculars, I realized with happiness that it was four bluebirds.

PTO Crayon Carnival planned for Saturday
On Saturday, the Cooperstown Parent Teacher Organization will present the annual Crayon Carnival at the Cooperstown Middle/High School Gym, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to inflatable rides, carnival chance games and face painting, the Carnival features a host of refreshments, from pizza, chili and soup to popcorn, snowcones and "Kindergoodies," baked goods made by the parents of kindergarteners.

Library Corner Preserving Documents
Do you have loose family documents, brittle or rare books that you would like to protect? If so, you’ll want to attend our Preservation Workshop to learn how to make a corrugated clamshell box. This box is made of blue corrugated acid-free board and completely encloses a book or paper items to provide protection. The workshop will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7. Advance registration is necessary and you’ll need to register in person at the library. A materials fee of $20 is payable at the time of registration. When you register, you will also be given a list of supplies that you need to bring to the workshop. Librarian Sarah Livingston will conduct this workshop. Unatego students prepare for annual variety show
The Unatego Junior-Senior High School will present its eighth annual variety show Friday and Saturday. Rural Three honors local groups at dinner
Six local organizations were recognized at a community dinner and recognition ceremony sponsored by the Rural Three For Tobacco Free Communities on Thursday, Feb. 9. Local organizations received certificates of appreciation for pledging not to accept cash contributions, sponsorships or in-kind donations from any tobacco company. Organizations awarded were the American Cancer Society, The Rural Health Network of South Central New York, Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network of South Central New York, The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Delaware County, First Night Oneonta Inc. and the Schoharie County Board of Health.

Paramedic students graduate from Bassett center
Twenty-six paramedic students graduated from the paramedic program of Bassett Healthcare’s Center for Rural Emergency Medical Services Education. The students represented a cross-section of upstate New Yorkers, encompassing 12 counties. While the majority of students were residents of the region, students from across the state, from Plattsburgh to Shoreham, Long Island, completed the paramedic course at Bassett Healthcare’s Center for Rural EMS Education.

Military Glee Club to sing in Stamford on Friday

Library Corner Mystery Photos
The library has received a donation of photographs and newspaper clippings of the River Street School from the 1950s era. This collection was generously donated by David Syvertsen. Many of the photos in this collection are not identified. We are featuring the photos in one of our display cases this month and are asking people to come in and try to help us identify the school children. Miss Blanche Eldred, a first-grade teacher, is in many of the photos. If you knew her, or went to the River Street school in the ’50s, please stop and see the display and help us identify everyone.

Milford Winterfest to feature food, activities
The Milford community will celebrate Winterfest beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. Events for children and adults will be at Milford Central School throughout the day. Sporting events will include basketball, soccer, relays, volleyball and snow tubing. There will also be ice cream making, a Friends of the Arts craft room and a quiet room for games and puzzles.

Poetry can be enjoyed by all ages in all its forms. Poems can rhyme or not, they can have a cadence to them that makes them perfect for reading aloud, they can be in stanzas or in forms that make shapes — there’s virtually no end to the way thoughts can be expressed in poetry, and that’s one of the beauties of poems.

Schoharie reports on 2005 ambulance calls
The Schoharie County Ambulance and Rescue Squad Association reported that 11 Schoharie County volunteer rescue squads and three first response units responded to about 2,600 ambulance calls in 2005. The 2,600 calls translate into about 21,000 service hours, all performed by volunteers.

Bassett honors employees for service milestones
Nearly 200 employees were honored for two decades or more of service to Bassett Healthcare at the 21st annual Employee Service Recognition Dinner. The event was held recently at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. Eighty-six of the employees honored at the dinner have 30 or more years of service. In addition, a luncheon was also held recently to honor hundreds more Bassett employees who have reached five-, 10- and 15-year service milestones.
