Poetry workshop to begin Saturday

ONEONTA — The Catskill Poetry Workshop, which features writing seminars, lectures, conferences and panels on the art and craft of poetry, will be presented as part of Hartwick College's Summer Programs from Saturday through July 8.

The workshop is also designed to offer a series of poetry readings by visiting faculty and guest writers for participants and the public. All readings will be held free of charge in Eaton Lounge, Bresee Hall, on the Hartwick campus.

Readings will be given by Dave Smith and Richard Frost on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Smith, who recently published his 14th full-length collection of poems, is a professor of English at Louisiana State University. Frost has published three poetry books, including "Neighbor Blood."

Jean Valentine, the author of eight poetry books including "Dream Barker," will present on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

On Monday at 4:30 p.m., Ron Pretty and David Baker will present readings. A writing teacher at Wollongong University in Australia, Pretty has been published widely. Baker is the poetry editor of The Kenyon Review, a professor of English at Denison University and the author of five books of poetry.

Readings will be presented by Michael Waters and Carol Frost on Monday at 8:30 p.m. A professor of English at Salisbury State University in Maryland, Waters is the author of six books of poems, including the soon to be published "Contemporary American Poetry." Frost, writer-in-residence at Hartwick College and director of the Catskill Poetry Workshop, has published eight poetry books, including "Love & Scorn," containing new and selected poems.

Readings will also be offered by Harriet Levin, whose first book of poetry, "The Christmas Show," was winner of a Barnard New Women Poet's Prize, and Ron Pretty on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

On July 5 at 4 p.m., Donald Justice and Carl Phillips will present. Justice is a Pulitzer Prize winner and author of nine books. A teacher at Washington University in St. Louis, Phillips has published four collections of poetry.

Smith and Ann Townsend, director of the Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writes Workshop at Denison University and author of "Dime Store Erotics," will conduct a reading on July 5 at 8:30 p.m.

Additional readings will be presented by Phillips and Frost on July 6 at 4 p.m.; Townsend and Waters on July 6 at 8:30 p.m.; and Levin and Baker on July 7 at 11 a.m.
