Man charged with trying to kill girlfriend

By Jill Fahy

Staff Writer

A Summit man is being held without bail after he allegedly stabbed and tried to kill his girlfriend and another man early Tuesday morning, state police at Loudonville said.

J.J. Yellen, 40, of Summit, was charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly stabbing Catherine Fletcher, 37, of Cobleskill, and Edward Barile, 34. Yellen also fired at the pair with a shotgun, troopers said.

Fletcher was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, hospital officials said.

Yellen was arraigned before town of Summit Justice Gerald W. Vester and sent to the Schoharie County jail without bail. He is scheduled to reappear in town court at 7 p.m. Feb. 26.

Troopers said they received a 911 call from Barile, who reported a stabbing and gunfire at Yellen's residence on Eminence Road.

Upon arrival at the home, troopers said, they found Barile with a minor stab wound to the shoulder, and Fletcher with stab wounds to her face, back, buttocks and legs.

Barile and Fletcher were transported to area hospitals, troopers said, and Barile was treated and released.

Troopers did not elaborate on a cause or motive for the incident.

Stamford lawyer Michael Jacobs, who is defending Yellen, said facts are still being collected about the stabbings, which Jacobs said may not have been committed by Yellen alone.

Jacobs said Yellen and Fletcher have been in an "on again, off again" relationship and that Fletcher was not living with Yellen at the time of the stabbings.

Jacobs said Yellen has a police record but it is limited to traffic violations.

The investigation is continuing and all information will be turned over to the Schoharie County District Attorney's Office for additional charges and grand jury action.
