Illegal drinkers targeted in sting

Staff Report

ONEONTA — Two arrests were made at one of nine local bars checked this weekend as part of the state police's statewide Underage Drinking Initiative, Sidney troopers said.

Locally, bars and restaurant-bars in Sidney, Unadilla, Afton, Bainbridge, Rockdale and Guilford were checked.

A bartender at the Long River Inn in Sidney was arrested for serving an underage patron and the bar will be reported to the state Liquor Authority, state police officials at Albany and Sidney said.

Christopher L. Pierce, 25, from Unadilla, was arrested in the early-morning hours Saturday for serving Dustan J. Ray, 20, of Bainbridge.

Ray was arrested for underage possession of alcohol and for trespassing because he had been barred from the bar by the proprietor at an earlier time, troopers said.

The local raid was conducted between Friday and early Saturday, involving Oneonta and Sidney troopers, they said.

Troopers said it was encouraging to find violations at just one bar.

"One is still one too many, but it's refreshing to see the others are making an effort to comply with the law," said Lt. Robert Croswell of Troop C in Sidney.

No violations were found at the other local bars checked, which included the Angel Inn in Guilford, Rockdale Inn in Rockdale, Jerry's Bar in Bainbridge, Rendezvous in Afton, the Afton Inn in Afton, Hideaway in Sidney, Community Lounge in Sidney and the Unadilla House in Unadilla.

Oneonta bars were not investigated because Oneonta City Police handle the area, although joint investigations between state and city police sometimes occur, Croswell said.

The UDI is a partnership between state police, Liquor Authority representatives and local law enforcement that targets violations of the state alcohol beverage control law.

The weekend's statewide investigation of 36 bars and 122 retail stores brought about 50 arrests, according to state police Superintendent James W. McMahon.

The monthly checks are often conducted at "festive" times, such as holidays and prom season, said Maj. Jack VanSteenburg with the state police at Albany.

"We're going to be out there," he said.

Police officials said people with information on individuals or establishments selling alcohol to minors can call local trooper stations or (866) UNDER 21.
