Ice storm knocks out power
Staff Report
Thousands were without power Saturday night and Sunday because of the weekend blast of winter weather, power company officials said.
"We had trouble all night long," said Kathy King, customer service manager for New York State Electric & Gas Corp. At the outages' peak, some 2,400 customers were without power. The longest time customers were without power, in the Waterville and Morrisville areas, was for 20 hours.
King said that wind, ice and fallen lines were responsible for the power outages.
At the height of the storm Sunday, Niagara Mohawk reported 4,000 customers without power - 3,000 in central New York - as icy branches fell on utility lines.
According to Dan Padavona, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a half inch to an inch of freezing rain was reported for the region Saturday night.
The power went out around 5 a.m. Sunday for 500 in Andes when a tree fell and took down some power lines, according to Wayne Marshfield, assistant manager of the Delaware County Electric Co-op. Power was restored at 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
Roughly 200 in Hamden and Delhi were also without power, Marshfield said. In addition, a power supplier went down, affecting customers in Gilboa and Jefferson.
Today's forecast calls for scattered snow showers in the morning and scattered snow or rain showers in the afternoon.
