Former soldier no longer student
Staff Report
The Hartwick College student who claimed he trained U.S. soldiers bound for Iraq as part of hoax, is no longer a student at the Oneonta school, a college official said Monday.
Rob Williams, 27, was a sophomore at Hartwick when he told college officials and The Daily Star that as a former member of the Military Police at Fort Drum, he was called back to train soldiers bound for Iraq in urban warfare. He later admitted the story was false. To illustrate the story, he posed in his dorm room with a gun that he claimed was issued by the Army. That was also shown later to be part of the hoax.
When college officials first saw the photo, he was suspended pending a hearing about the incident, college officials said.
On Monday, Hartwick's Dean of Student Life Greg Krikorian said, "Our campus process has been completed, and he (Williams) is no longer a student here." Federal privacy restrictions, he said, prevented him from saying anything more.
Williams has an April 28 date in Oneonta City Court on a charge of fourth-degree weapons possession relating to the incident. The charge can bring a sentence of up to $1,000 and 15 days in jail, police said.
Williams did not return a message left on his answering machine Monday afternoon.
