Man charged with sodomy

Staff Report

ONEONTA — An Oneonta man was arrested this week for allegedly sodomizing a 14-year-old girl at knife-point at his employer's warehouse, city police said.

Steven C. Phillips, 47, was charged Monday with first-degree sodomy, a felony. He was held Monday night in city jail and was arraigned Tuesday morning in Oneonta City Court.

Police said Phillips had offered to give the girl, an acquaintance of the Phillips family, a ride home from his house, where she had been visiting Sunday.

According to police reports, Phillips — who works for Bresee's in Oneonta — instead drove the girl to his employer's warehouse on Duane Street at about 11 p.m., where he reportedly held the girl at knife-point and forced her to have deviant sexual intercourse.

Police said Phillips drove the girl part of the way home early Monday morning, dropping her off a couple of blocks from her house.

The girl, police said, told her mother what happened, and her mother reported the incident Monday morning. The girl was treated at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and released.

Phillips was arrested at his house late Monday night. Following his arraignment Tuesday morning, he was taken to Otsego County jail, where he is being held on $2,500 bail, pending further court proceedings.

As of Tuesday evening, police said they had not yet found the knife Phillips allegedly used.

An investigation into the incident is continuing, police said.
