Car enthusiasts to cruise into Walton tonight

By Patricia Breakey

Delhi News Bureau

WALTON — More than 40 vintage cars are expected to show up tonight for the first official cruise-in of Walton's newly formed car club, according to organizer Lynn McCall.

The cruise-in will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Walton school bus garage on Delaware Street in Walton.

The event is set to begin with a club meeting at which some important decisions will be made — including the naming of the club, McCall said.

"We are voting on whether it will be the Walton Cruisers or the Walton CruZers," McCall said.

McCall said he and Wayne Hulbert have done a lot of the footwork to get the group organized, but added that the creation of the club was a group effort that grew out of a general interest in forming a car club.

"We all get together to go to cruise-ins and car shows anyway, so we decided it would be fun to have a club," McCall said.

McCall is a member of the Walton 50s Revisited committee. He said the car club is planning to participate in a two-day show on July 12 and 13 and will be sponsoring the best of show trophy at the 50s Revisited car show.

Ken Landry, who organizes the 50s Revisited weekend, and is a member of the new group, said, "It's about time we had a car club in Walton. We should have had one years ago. There are so many old-car people in this area."

Landry said the group plans to be loosely structured.

"There will be no pressure, no official boards, few rules — just fun and fellowship," Landry said.

McCall said a Unadilla car club plans to attend the cruise-in. He said they are leaving Sidney at about 6:30 p.m. to head for Walton.

"Everyone is invited to stop by, see the old cars and just visit," McCall said.

The group is in the process of designing and ordering official shirts, which will feature a picture of Papa's Diner on the front and a Delaware County map, with Walton highlighted, on the back. McCall said the shirts will also have road signs for historic Route 206 and state Route 10, which intersect in Walton.

The new club would like to help other organizations with community events, McCall said.

"If a group would like a display of vintage cars at their event, all they have to do is call us," McCall said. "It's a great excuse to get our vehicles out of the garage."

The groups next meeting is on May 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Walton school bus garage.
