Peltier case to be topic

ONEONTA — Glenn Marshall, president of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts and national chairman of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, will present "An Update on the Peltier Case" at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Marshall's talk will be in the Center for Multicultural Experiences in Lee Hall at the State University College at Oneonta.

Marshall said he will speak about the latest events involving the release of the American Indian activist and its importance in the light of current events.

Peltier, a member of the Anishinabe and Lakota Nations and a leader of the American Indian Movement, has been imprisoned for more than 27 years following his conviction in the shooting deaths of two FBI agents in a skirmish on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1975.

Many people believe Peltier was wrongly convicted, presenters said, and Amnesty International, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and Jesse Jackson are among those who have called for his release.

Marshall, a Marine Corps veteran, is a peace activist and a leader in American Indian rights. He has chaired the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee for three years.

For more information about Marshall's appearance, call the Center for Multicultural Experiences at 436-2663.

Jared Jones, age and hometown unavailable, was taken to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with head injuries, troopers said. Hospital officials said he was not listed as a patient Sunday afternoon.

Jones was riding in the bed of a pickup driven by Ernest Parsons, 20, of Sharon Springs, troopers said. Parsons was northbound on Rolands Way in the village of Sharon Springs when Jones fell out of the pickup at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, troopers said.

Man nabbed in domestic

DOWNSVILLE —A man was arrested following a domestic dispute early Saturday, state police at Margaretville said.

Roger Vernolb, 21, of Downsville was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, second-degree burglary, and third-degree criminal mischief, all felonies, troopers said. He was also charged with third-degree assault and obstruction of governmental administration, both misdemeanors, troopers said.

Troopers responded to the dispute after a neighbor reported it at about 3 a.m., they said. Vernolb, who was still present, had allegedly broken the door and window of a trailer where a woman, who is the mother of his child, lived, troopers said. She was not seriously injured in the incident and it was not known whether the child was at home, they said.

Vernolb was arraigned in Colchester Town Court and sent to the Delaware County jail on $10,000 bail, pending his reappearance on Thursday, troopers said.

Drug court to cite clients

ONEONTA — The Otsego County Drug Treatment Court will promote several participants to advanced phases and graduate one of its members at ceremonies during a regular bi-weekly court session today.

The court will convene at 3 p.m. in the Oneonta City Courtroom at 81 Main St.

Drug court participants are non-violent offenders convicted of offenses where addiction to alcohol and other substances is found to be the root cause of their criminal behavior, according to Leo Giovagnoli, drug court coordinator.

Rather than serve jail sentences, those deemed eligible voluntarily enter the court's jurisdiction to begin an intensive, highly structured program of treatment, counseling and close supervision that demands total abstinence from drugs and alcohol, he said.

Continued abstinence, he added, and progress through three phases toward recovery from the disease of addiction eventually leads to graduation following a year of uninterrupted "clean time."

The drug court proceedings, presided over by Otsego County Judge Michael V. Coccoma, are open to the public. A reception in honor of the graduate and several participants scheduled for phase promotions will be at 10 Market St. following the court session.
