Memorial Day Events — Chenango County

Afton

Afton will hold Memorial Day activities on Monday. A parade will line up on Pleasant Avenue at the intersection of Main Street and Pleasant Avenue and start at 10 a.m. The procession will go to the Susquehanna River Bridge and proceed to Foster Park, where the services will be held.

Master of ceremonies will be James Morrow. The Rev. Christopher Prezorski of the Afton Baptist Church will give the invocation and Benediction, and Marjorie Secrest, a retired Afton school teacher, will be the speaker of the day.

Ryan Berkeley will recite the Gettysburg Address, and Corey Dailey will recite In Flanders Field.

Afton Boy and Girl Scouts will place poppy wreaths on crosses of those who have given their lives in service of their country.

The Afton High School marching band will provide music.

The Girl and Boy Scouts, the Legion and VFW, Afton Fire Department and auxiliaries and other local organizations will also be taking part in the parade.

Bainbridge

The Memorial Day services and parade will be on Monday. The parade will form at the Greenlawn Elementary School at 10 a.m. Services will begin at the cemetery at 10:30 a.m., with the parade starting at the conclusion of those services.

In case of inclement weather, services will be held in the Bainbridge-Guilford High School auditorium.

Parade route will be: Greenlawn Avenue to Freiot Avenue to North Main Street, right on North Main Street, left at the Historical Society to Front Street and East Main Street. Veterans will proceed to the River Bridge for services. All other units will continue on the to the Village Green.

Ceremonies at the Village Greenwill be led by the master of ceremonies, American Legion Post 806 Legionnaire Richard Rusakiewicz.

New Berlin

Frank H. Arnold Post 348 of the American Legion has announced that Kenneth Wiggins of New Berlin will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day services to be held in the village of New Berlin on Monday.

Memorial Day observances will start with a parade at 9:30 a.m. leaving Hyde Park and proceeding south on North Main Street and entering the central school lawn on South Main Street where the ceremonies will take place at approximately 9:50 a.m. The following order of march has been suggested: American Legion, Unadilla Valley Central School Band and Color Guard, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Pittsfield Fire Department, New Berlin Fire Department and any other organization or units that want to part.

Any organization is invited to participate that wishes to honor the day. All those marching should have their units at Hyde Park between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Anyone wishing to march in the parade is welcome. Call Bud Lyon at 847-6214 for more information.

Norwich

The Memorial Day parade will form at 8:30 a.m. on Canal Street next to the VFW Club. The parade will step off Monday around 9 a.m. at the VFW on East Main Street and travel to West Side Park.

The parade will include Scout units in addition to the veterans.

The American Legion Riders Motorcycle Club will ride in the parade for the first time. There will be veterans and Scout units marching. Parade commander is Bradd Vickers.

The speaker will be former Mayor Bob Raphael and veteran of the Dominican Republic Expedition in the mid-'60s.

The master of ceremonies will be Terry Bresina, a state veterans counselor. He will be presenting medals to a number of veterans.

South New Berlin

The annual community Memorial Day program will be held in front of the South New Berlin Firehouse on Monday. Serving as master of ceremonies at the 11 a.m. program, will be Donald Dibble, American Legion Post 1289 commander The invocation will be given by David Dibbell from the Church of Christ in South New Berlin.

There will be a guest speaker, and the Unadilla Valley Central School Band, under the direction of Paul Hudson, will be playing and leading the parade. The Benediction will be given by David Dibbell.

The parade, with "Doc" DeBoer as parade marshal and Harold Funke as sergeant at arms, will form at the firehouse following the brief program and proceed to the four corners where a wreath will be placed at the Legion Park monument and the flag will be raised by veterans Richard Pratt and Kenneth Axtell. It will then continue on to the cemetery where there will be a short service.
