In a second tragedy for a local family, former Oneonta resident Maud Hamilton Kiwiet-Pantaleoni drowned Tuesday in a rafting accident in Sullivan County.
Kiwiet-Pantaleoni, 44, of Kalamazoo, Mich., was rafting with her 15-year-old son and a 7-year-old cousin on the Neversink River when the rubber raft they were in overturned. The accident also claimed the life of the 7-year-old boy, Calvin Hewitt of Cambridge, Mass. Kiwiet-Pantaleoni’s son, Joshua Kiwiet, managed to escape.
Kiwiet-Pantaleoni was raised in Oneonta, the daughter of Patricia and Hewitt Pantaleoni, a State University College at Oneonta professor who died in 1988. Her mother is an Oneonta lawyer and her sister Lucy Bernier is a city judge.
