ONEONTA The History Club of the State University College at Oneonta will present two events this week as part of the college’s celebration of Women’s History Month. At 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center, Karen Green, a student in the college’s Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies, will present "A Wandering Object of Vice and Disgust: Women and Vagrancy Laws in Early Nineteenth Century New York City." Her presentation will explore the lives of the many women who found themselves living and working on the city’s streets. At 7 p.m. Thursday in the Alden Room of Milne Library, SUCO history major Juandrea Bates will present "Researching Social History: Women in Colonial Albany." Woman charged after accident
DAVENPORT A Davenport woman was charged with drunken driving after a one-vehicle accident near Davenport Center on Saturday that left her injured.
State police at Oneonta said Phyllis VanBuren, 18, was charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawful possession of marijuana. She was also ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely, they said.
Troopers said she was the only person in a vehicle traveling on Pumpkin Hollow Road at about 1:45 a.m. when the crash occurred.
Officials at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta said VanBuren was admitted Saturday, treated for unspecified injuries and discharged Sunday.
Man charged in camp burglaries
SMYRNA Chenango County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Smyrna man for allegedly burglarizing seasonal camps in the area.
Douglas R. Nichols, 42, was arrested Thursday in connection with burglaries at a camp on Bliven-Coye Road in Smyrna, three camps on Graham Road in Smyrna, and an attempt to burglarize another camp on county Route 10 in Pharsalia, deputies said.
Deputies charged Nichols with three counts of third-degree burglary, one count of attempted third-degree burglary, two counts of petit larceny, one count of second-degree criminal trespass, and six counts of trespass.
Nichols also allegedly stole a radio from a car on Stage Road in Otselic and a foam target from another camp on county Route 10 in Pharsalia.
The burglaries took place between the summer of 2004 and March 16, deputies said.
Most of the stolen property was recovered from Nichols’ residence, deputies said.
Nichols was released and will return to court in the future.
