Despite rumors to the contrary, Unadilla Elementary School will open on time, Unatego Central School officials said Tuesday.
The Main Street school was affected when the area was flooded in June, but it will open to students as scheduled Sept. 6, business manager Nicholas Rosas said.
Only the school basement flooded, he said, and much of the damage was to such things as boilers, electrical systems and hot-water heaters. Extensive repairs were made to the mechanical systems to have the building ready on time, Rosas said.
Some work will be going on when school starts, but that won’t delay the opening, he said.
Such things as fire alarms and phones are up and running, he said. Some furniture and materials were ruined, and a professional records-recovery firm is providing assistance.
All occupied areas were tested for mold and found to be clean, Rosas said, though one storage area will have to be redone.
Man pleads guilty to felony DWI
In Delaware County Court on Monday, Wayne Burling, 23, of Walton and Bloomville, pleaded guilty to felony driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, failure to keep right, unlicensed operation and refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test.
Burling was arrested in the village of Walton on March 18.
Delaware County Judge Carl Becker said Burling had previously been convicted of driving while intoxicated in Suffolk County on June 25, 2003, and March 3, 2005.
Becker scheduled Burling’s sentencing for Oct. 10 and released him on $1,000 bail.
