Sweets for sale in Commons plaza

Straws and Sweets has opened another shop in the Cooperstown area.

Store owner Gail McManus said the shop in the Hartwick Commons plaza might be more convenient for people who have trouble getting into Cooperstown during the busy summer months.

"It’s an expansion," McManus said. "I’m looking forward to seeing my regular customers during the summer."

Straws and Sweets started out as a single shop in downtown Cooperstown. McManus said the new store carries the same products as the first one; the Commons shop will also have baseball-related products, she said Tuesday.

McManus said the store will be open throughout the year and will have fall and Christmas items in those seasons.

The shop had its grand opening in the middle of May. Its summer hours are between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily; winter hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number for the new store is 547-5513.

Otesaga eateries rated 'the best'

The restaurants at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown have been named "the best" by an Albany-area magazine.

Capital Region Living Magazine named the restaurants "The Best in Otsego County 2007," according to the magazine and Otesaga officials. This edition of the magazine was published recently. Readers in the capital region voted on the awards.

The award was for both the Hawkeye Grill and the hotel’s main dining room, according to a news release from the Otesaga.

"We are very pleased with this recognition," John D. Irvin, general manager of the Otesaga, said in a prepared statement.

A partial listing of the magazine’s selections is available online at www.crlmag.com.

Fitness fair set for Saturday

Sport Tech in Oneonta is having a fitness fair Saturday.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the fair, according to a news release.

Podiatrist David Joseph and massage therapist Kristin Sloth will be in the store until noon. Chiropractor David Picinich will be in the store doing digital foot scanning after 1 p.m.

People don’t have to make appointments for the events, which are free.

Application pending for Wilber Bank branch

An application by Wilber National Bank to open a branch in the Syracuse area is still being considered by a federal regulatory agency.

The bank submitted the application to the office of the Comptroller of the Currency in late April.

Wilber spokeswoman Sallyann Lamanna said Tuesday the application was waiting for approval.

The new branch would be at 6432-6450 Collamer Road in East Syracuse. It will be Wilber’s first branch in Onondaga County.

Wilber has more than 20 branches throughout Otsego, Delaware, Chenango, Schoharie, Broome and Ulster counties.

According to a news release Wilber Corp. sent out with its first-quarter earnings results, Wilber bought the property in Syracuse in the first quarter of 2007.

"The company’s plan is to establish a full-service branch in this market before the end of 2007, similar to its recent expansion into the Kingston market," the release said.

Wilber National Bank and the Wilber Corp. have their headquarters in Oneonta.
