Business Beat: Resnick’s Mattress Outlet closes

Resnick’s Mattress Outlet in Oneonta is closed for good, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

The store closed at the end of March when its parent company went through a foreclosure, said Jeff Bonham of Resnick’s Mattress Factory Direct.

"The old Resnick’s went out of business at the end of April," Bonham said. "It was a pretty ugly financial situation."

The new company negotiated leases with some of the landlords where the outlet had stores, Bonham said. Those did not include the Oneonta location.

Resnick’s in Oneonta was on the corner of Main Street and Ford Avenue.

"They are completely out of business," Bonham said. "There are no assets left."

He said the stores in the Resnick’s chain were a small part of the company, which also built mattresses. Remaining stores are in Massena, Colonie, Kingston, Ithaca and Middletown.

Oneonta Mayor John Nader said he didn’t know of any plans for the Resnick’s space.

He said he saw items being moved out of the store last week.

Many potential businesses are looking for smaller retail spaces and not larger spaces such as Resnick’s, Nader said Tuesday.

"There does seem to be a mismatch," he said.

Restaurant to open on River Street in city

A restaurant based on the former Iannelli’s Ristorante is opening next week on River Street.

"Bella Michael’s" is opening Tuesday at 57 River St., Anna Iannelli said. The restaurant is named for Iannelli’s husband, Michael, who died in 2005, and the daughter of chef Alex Gracias.

Iannelli sold the first restaurant to Marton and Margozata Shtaynberger in 2005. It closed earlier this year after being sold to developers for Walgreens.

Gracias was the chef at Iannelli’s Ristorante, Iannelli said Tuesday.

"I’m supporting them," Iannelli said of Gracias and his wife, Diana, who own the restaurant. "He’s been a family member for the past 25 years."

The new restaurant will have about a dozen employees, Iannelli said, including the same wait staff and bartenders who were in the Chestnut Street restaurant.

Iannelli said the menu will be the same as at Iannelli’s Ristorante.

"The old is gone," she said. "It’s just a continuation of the old with the new."

Bella Michael’s will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will be closed Sundays.
