Lisa (Alex) Miller was born in Minneapolis but moved to Oneonta before her first birthday. She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1988 and Tufts University in 1992.

Miller served as editor in chief of the OHS Echo for two years and wrote for her college newspaper, the Tufts Daily. She began working at The Daily Star in 1992 as a reporter covering the health, education and city police beats. In 1993, she won a third-place award for feature writing from the New York State Associated Press Association. She left reporting in 1996 and became The Daily Star's community news editor. In 2002, Miller received an honorable mention award for column writing from the New York State Associated Press Association. She served as community editor until June 2003, when she left The Star to spend more time with her family and work as a freelance writer.
