Daily Star columnist
Mark Simonson writes a freelance column about local history. He was born and raised in Oneonta and returned in 1997 after a more than 20-year absence. During those years after college, he had jobs in broadcast journalism and the non-profit sector in Norwich, Binghamton and Greater Boston. Mark earned an A.A.S. degree in broadcasting management from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, as well as a B.S. degree in business administration from SUNY Oswego.
When appointed Oneonta City Historian in 1998, Mark wanted to revive a tradition in local history writing that covers a broad range of historical periods, as well as communities around The Heartland of New York. When not researching and writing about history, Mark freelances on various writing projects around the region, among other endeavors.
Mark is also active with The Greater Oneonta Historical Society and the Oneonta High Alumni Association. Considering himself anything but a professional historian, Mark has a keen curiosity about local history, and is learning a great deal he didn't previously know about the region. That's why Mark always welcomes your comments, recollections and ideas about columns that appear twice weekly in The Daily Star.
