Cheers

o ... To another successful Hall of Fame Game event in Cooperstown, which included the Cooperstown Game Day Parade as well as the baseball events at Doubleday Field.

For sure, the sunny weather helped, but once again the village and Major League Baseball showed they can pull off an event that combines national and local interests.

It would have been great to get the New York Mets, as was originally scheduled before ESPN grabbed them for its national broadcast the night before. But the Toronto Blue Jays filled the void admirably, with two of their players (Alex Rios and winner Vernon Wells) dominating the home-run derby even as the Baltimore Orioles won the exhibition game.

The event also displayed the positive effects this area has had on some of the game’s participants, including Toronto General Manager J.P. Riccardi and third-base coach Brian Butterfield. Riccardi was a coach for the 1984 Oneonta Yankees; Butterfield played for and managed the O-Yanks through the years. Both had nothing but good things to say about the franchise and area, a ringing endorsement for the baseball experience this region offers.

We look forward to the Induction Ceremony this summer with the hope that Cooperstown and the Hall can again collaborate effectively despite a much-larger expected crowd.

o ... To the offering of an Internet safety presentation given to students at area schools recently.

Despite the ubiquitous nature of the Web in our lives, it’s easy to forget that children, even teenagers, might not be as aware of the dangers that accompany the opportunities and information available online. Arming them with knowledge of what to avoid and be suspicious of is not a fun thing to do, but it may prevent far-worse results.

With the Internet becoming so important _ and its use encouraged _ at school, raising student awareness becomes a responsibility for schools as well as parents.

We encourage all districts to look into similar presentations.

o ... To those who completed efforts to open the Joseph L. Popp Jr. Butterfly Conservatory, named after the man who came up with the idea.

Popp died in June in an accident on Interstate 88, delaying the opening. But thanks to the efforts of Christine and Maebdh Ryan, the Oneonta property is home to butterflies, goldfish and a variety of birds and plants.

It’s a fitting tribute to the dream Popp conceptualized for the former farm on state Route 7.

o ... To Diversity Rules, which will celebrate its one-year anniversary of publication on Sunday in Oneonta.

The bi-monthly magazine, founded by James Koury, who also serves as editor in chief, features stories, commentary, reviews and other content for, by and about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community of upstate New York.

This publication is doing a good job serving not just members of the LGBTQ community, but the community at large. It’s an outlet for many people who in the past didn’t have an opportunity to be heard.

We congratulate Koury and all of the magazine’s contributors and supporters for a wonderful publication. We wish them many more successful years.
