o ... To the beginning of summer recreation programs throughout the area, offering activities to many without forcing them to empty their wallets.

Many people think sports when summer rec programs are mentioned. However, many don’t require running around; for example, there are library programs in a number of communities, including reading, activity events and contests. It’s a good option for parents who want to prevent their children from having summer brain drain, and many children will find something to enjoy.

There are numerous museums and societies in the area that are open year-round, and maybe you haven’t gotten to them yet. Summer’s a chance for that. For instance, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society is offering walking, bus and trolley tours this summer, and many other places have summer hours and offerings.

And for those who desire to burn some energy, many communities offer rec programs for all sorts of sporting activities, including baseball, softball and swimming.

Wherever your interests lie, we urge people to get out there, be active and immerse themselves within the community this summer.

o ... To the efforts expended and accolades garnered by area high school athletes this spring season.

Leading this group was Afton’s softball team, which earned a trip to the state final and had three of its players make all-state teams. There was also a pack of track athletes who finished high at the state track meet, including Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton’s Kati Holowacz (10th overall, 1500 meters), Dustin Ross (second, Division II; seventh, Federation, 400 meters), and OHS senior Tim Greenberg (third, D-II steeplechase). In baseball, Cooperstown won the Section Three Class C title.

There were many other strong performances, and all area athletes should be proud of what they accomplished this year.

... To the acts of vandalism that have occurred at Sidney High School recently, where the vandal or vandals have stolen swipe-card readers, and in one incident, gained building access and caused property damage. The incidents have cost the school thousands of dollars.

As for the reasoning behind the thefts and vandalism, there is no defense, whether it be a prank, a random incident or an act of revenge for some perceived wrong. These types of incidents do not merely damage property but can inflict harm on the spirit and security of the community. If schools are targeted, many may think, then anyone can be.

We urge anyone with knowledge of the incidents to come forward. While schools should not overreact to these crimes when preparing security measures, all districts should ensure that their buildings, outside of school hours, are as impenetrable as possible.
