o ... To the State University College of Technology at Delhi’s efforts to start an online program for nursing. The bachelor’s of science in nursing would be available to registered nurses who would only have to come to the SUNY Delhi campus once during the course.
The school does not offer a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and this would be a strong improvement over the associate’s degree for RNs and certificate program for licensed practical nurses. It may also help the area attract and retain more nurses.
Nurses are at a premium in this area as well as throughout the country, and the demand is likely to increase. Efforts such as that are welcome and necessary, and we hope the Board of Regents sees such a need when it considers SUNY Delhi’s proposal.
o ... To everyone who helped put together the Polo Field Fly-In in Gilbertsville earlier this month. The air show was a fundraiser for Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care and collected a suggested $3 donation from adults.
About 900 adults attended over the weekend, hosted by Leatherstocking R/C Buzzards, and members deserve credit for helping support a worthy cause.
Of course, the show offered a lot worth seeing. Radio-controlled aircraft and their operators came from many states on the East Coast.
As one flier said, it’s great to see other fliers, but even better when it’s for a charitable cause. The mix of entertainment and giving is one we hope continues.
o ... To the Schoharie Board of Supervisors for getting creative to educate about the area’s history.
Recently, its members dressed as people would in 1777 to debate _ not just re-enact _ the pressing issue of that time. The Schoharie District Committee on Safety was forced to decide then if it would send its militia to aid against British troops or retain its force to protect against nearby Indian forces.
We would bet most current residents were unaware of this historical situation, and some might not know of Old Stone Fort Days, which are Aug. 11 and 12 and celebrate the history of the area.
Those events can educate us about the past.
o ... To the Otsego County Board of Representatives’ recognition of United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties and its executive director, Theresa Capuano. The board resolution noted the organization’s continued work, even though the one-year anniversary of the flood has passed. It also mentioned how the organization is involved with the county’s disaster-preparedness committee.
We join in appreciation for the organization’s work and look for continued cooperation between community groups and county government.
