'Night Out For Kids' set for Saturday
ONEONTA The Oneonta State baseball program is sponsoring a "Night Out For Kids" for children age 8-14 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chase Physical Education Building on the campus of Oneonta State.
Activities will include swimming, basketball, soccer, batting cages, pitching speed gun stand, a dance studio with music and a movie from 7-9 p.m.
A concession stand will offer hot dogs and soda. The cost for the event is $7 per person, $12 for two children in the same family or $18 maximum for three or more children in the same family.
All parents need to sign their children in from 6:15-6:30 p.m. and pick up their children from 9:15-9:30 p.m. All children must enter Chase Gym through the side door facing the Netzer Administration Building.
Proceeds from the event will be used to help the baseball team fund its trip to Florida and buy equipment for the program.
"Night Out For Kids" events will also be held on Oct. 21, Nov. 11, Dec. 2, Jan. 20 and Feb. 3. For more information, call Oneonta State baseball coach Rick Ferchen at 436-2661.
Cobleskill basketball reception set
COBLESKILL Donna Fendrick of WRGB-TV in Albany will serve as the host of Cobleskill's seventh annual `Evening with the Fighting Tigers' basketball reception at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Best Western Inn of Cobleskill.
Admission is $10 and hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided. Proceeds will benefit the basketball program.
The Fighting Tigers are coming off a season in which they posted their sixth straight 20-victory campaign, as they went 22-8 in 1999-2000. It was also the team's eighth straight season in which it qualified for the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament.

Youth soccer club to hold tryouts
ONEONTA The Oneonta Soccer Club will hold tryouts for its travel teams. Youth can only try out for teams in their appropriate age group. The following is a list of age groups including date of birth requirements, contact people and tryout schedules:
Under 7-8 coed (8/1/92 7/31/94): Contact Jim Rudloff at 432-4532 after 6 p.m.
Under 9-10 girls (8/1/90 7/31/92): Tryout will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday on Catella Field. Call Jane McIntosh-Martin at 652-7904.
Under 15 girls (8/1/85 7/31/86): Call Rick Eastman at 432-7803 (daytime) or 432-1601 after 6 p.m.
Under 15-16 girls (8/1/84 7/31/86): Tryout will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at Catella Field. Call Jean Payne at 432-1856.
Under 19 girls (8/1/84 7/31/84): Call Joe Forgiano at 433-2390.
Under 19 boys (8/1/81 7/31/84): Call Terry Cook at 432-6585.
Locals fare well at swimming event
Four area swimmers fared well at the 28th annual Leatherstocking G.O.S.T. Splash, where 15 Adirondack masters swimming records were set.
Nancy Creveling of Unadilla swam in the 40-44 women's age-group and was first in the 500 freestyle (9:35.31) and the 1,650 freestyle (33:03.82) in her first masters swim meet.
Donna Higgie of Gilbertsville was first in the 500 freestyle (9:13.53) in the 45-49 women's age-group.
John Hurley of Oneonta competed in the 60-64 men's age-group and was first in the 50 freestyle (53.53), the 100 freestyle (2:15.02), the 15 breaststroke (1:06.26) and the 100 breaststroke (2:09.49). Hurley was second in the 200 breaststroke (5:43.39).
Verna Engstrom-Heg of Oneonta was first in the 500 freestyle (10:18.00), the 1,650 freestyle (38:20.74) and the 200 individual medley (6:01.83) for women ages 70-74. Engstrom-Heg had Adirondack Masters Swimming records in the 500 and 1,650 frees.
Susquehanna Bass tournament results
The Susquehanna Bass Association held its Kirns Body Shop Classic Bass Tournament on Otsego Lake on Oct. 8. The results are:
First place: Lou Falvo and Jim Dillenbeck, five-fish limit, 17 pounds. Second: John Burnside and Gary Edwards, five fish, 14.77. Third: Tom Trelease and Jamie Goswelier, five fish, 13.65. Fourth: Mike Barse and Vic VanSteenburg, five fish, 12.58. Fifth: Al Savianeso and Stan McCumber, five fish, 11.51.
Big fish of the tournament went to Jim Dillenbeck with a largemouth weighing 4.49 pounds. Big smallmouth of the day went to Tom Trelease weighing in at 3.70 pounds. There were 12 limits caught out of 21 boats and 77 fish caught and released. The average weight was 2.19 pounds each.
The next tournament is Franks Fun Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Otsego Lake. It is open to the public and people may fish three per boat.
Another Susquehanna Bass tournament will follow on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saratoga Lake. For more information, call Vic at 432-5262 (nights) or Frank at 432-7553 (days).
