Roxbury soccer honored for academics
ROXBURY The New York State Public High School Athletic Association recently honored the boys and girls soccer teams from Roxbury with Scholar-Athlete Team awards.
The list of contributing players is as follows, with name followed by grade and academic average.

Local masters sweep swimming events
ALBANY Three area master swimmers participated in the Albany "Turkey Dunk" Swimming meet on Nov. 26 and came back with 11 victories in 11 events in age-group competition. The meet was held at the Albany Academy Pool and was an Empire State Games qualifier meet.
John Hurley, 63, of Oneonta, won five events. He took the 50 breaststroke in 1:03, the 50 backstroke in 1:04, the 100 free in 2:12, the 100 breaststroke in 2:45, and the 200 breaststroke in 5:36.
Verna Engstrom-Heg of North Franklin won four events (58.72 in the 50 free; 2:33 in the 100 individual medley; 4:25 in the 200 free; 11:11 in the 500 free). Engstrom-Heg, 70, competed in the World Masters Swimming Championships last summer in Munich, Germany.
Donna Higgie, 45, of Gilbertsville, won the 100 backstroke in 1:44 and the 500 free in 9:22.
The meet was sponsored by the Adirondack District Masters Swimmers.
Locals advance in Elks Hoop Shoot
ONEONTA Six area basketball players advanced from the Elks Hoop Shoot contest by winning their respective age-groups on Dec. 2. The results are as follows:
Girls 8-9: Madie Harlem, Oneonta; Boys 8-9: Alex Solliere, Oneonta; Girls: 10-11: Irene Drimmer, Oneonta; Boys: 10-11: Brandon Cuddy, Oneonta; Girls 12-13: Kate Jaffe, Oneonta; Boys 12-13: Kyle Buel, Franklin.
YMCA gymnasts fare well
ONEONTA Katie Sessions and Kristin Winn, competing for the Family YMCA Gymnastics Team, took the first-place team trophy for level 6 competitors.
In the 10-11 age group, Sessions was first all-around. She finished first on vault, bars, beam and floor. Winn was third all-around in the 12-and-over age group. She was first on beam, third on bars and fourth on vault and floor.
In level 4 (11 age-group), Emily Bristol was first all-around. She was second on floor and vault, and third on bars and beam. In the 9 age-group, Holly Chamberlain was second all-around after placing first on beam, second on floor, third on bars and fifth on vault. Ashlee Nobile, competing in the 8 age-group, was second all-around (second on vault, bars, beam and floor).
In level 5, Cyndi Harris was fourth all-around (first on beam, third on floor, and fifth on bars). Sarah Lister was sixth all-around in 10 age-group (fourth on beam and sixth on bars). In the 8-9 age-group, Tim Bristol was first on bars, second on vault and third on floor.
In Level 7 (12-and-over), Cheryl Blechman was second all-around. She was second on vault, third on bars and beam, and fourth on floor. In Level 8, (12-and-over), Claire Blechman was third all-around (first on bars, third on vault and bars and fourth on floor).
Tennis tournament set for Dec. 16-17
ONEONTA A doubles tennis tournament, sponsored by Catskill Orthopedics, P.C., will be held Dec. 16 and 17.
The tournament format is 16 teams maximum and running from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 16. The winner of the round robin format will play in the final against Paul and Kevin van der Sommen in a best-of-five set match at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 17. Clemente camp Dec. 26-31
ONEONTA The Roberto Clemente All-Stars are recruiting baseball players to participate in a six-day instructional camp to be held at Florida's Homestead Baseball Complex from Dec. 26-31. The camp offers opportunities for players to improve their skills and showcase their talents before some of the country's top college coaches.
