Hartwick women top Oneonta in lacrosse

ONEONTA Sophomore Emily Dark scored five goals to lead the Hartwick College women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over Oneonta State on Sunday at All-Weather Field.
Dark scored twice off of free position attempts and had three unassisted goals. Sophomore Leslie Enck scored three goals and senior Adrienne Spinozzi contributed two goals and one assist for the Hawks (2-0).
The Red Dragons (1-2) scored the first goal of the game, but Hartwick came back to take a 4-1 lead with 14:13 remaining in the first half. Hartwick led 6-2 at halftime and 12-5 with 3:01 left in regulation.
Freshman midfielder Melissa DiRaddo and junior midfielder Pam Intorcia scored two goals each for the Red Dragons. Nicole Morgan and Sarah Andrews had one goal apiece.
Goaltender Amanda Hatfield made six saves for Hartwick. Alicia Groveston scored her first collegiate goal and led the Hawks with three forced turnovers.
Hartwick will play at Cortland State at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Springfield 14, Hartwick 8
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Springfield scored three goals in the first 2 minutes and 21 seconds Saturday and cruised past the Hawks.
Springfield (1-0), the ninth ranked team in Division III, got four goals from senior Nick Meyers. Junior Bill Metzger had three goals and one assist.
Hartwick (2-1), which is ranked 17th, was led by junior Ross Pino, who had three goals and two assists. Junior Ethan Poole had three goals and freshman Kevin Geraghty added two assists.
The Hawks trailed 8-4 at halftime, but rallied in the third quarter to cut the gap to 9-7 entering the final period.
Springfield pulled away in the final stanza, however, outscoring the Hawks, 5-1.
Jeremy Platt made 26 saves for Springfield. Hartwick goaltender Mark Colite had 19.
Hartwick will play host to 10th-ranked Rensselaer at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

FREEPORT Playing the 10th-ranked team in Division III, the Red Dragons suffered their first defeat of the season Saturday at Freeport High School.
The Red Dragons (2-1), who are ranked 20th, fell behind 5-1 after one quarter and trailed 11-1 at halftime.
Tom Terzulli led the Red Hawks (2-0) with five goals and five assists. Ben Terzulli had two goals and five assists, Anthony Lombardi had three goals and two assists and Dan Perlman had a hat trick.
Matt Puerta scored two goals for O-State and Mike Massari and Brian Balash each had a goal and assist.
Oneonta will play at Hartwick next Saturday. Last season, the Red Dragons beat the Hawks, 12-11, in overtime.

VILLANOVA, Pa. Junior Megan Thomson had five goals and one assist to lead 20th-ranked Hartwick on Sunday.
The Hawks (8-7) and Wildcats (3-4) were tied 7-7 at halftime. But Hartwick outscored Villanova, 7-1, in the second half.
Ashleigh Jacobs scored three goals and had three assists. Alison Loveless and Sheri Johnson both had two goals and one assist. Courtney Hennessy led the Hawks with three assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Audrey Lohse finished with 10 saves and one assist.
Hartwick will play Queens College at Marist in the CWPA New York Divisional tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday.

PRINCETON, N.J. Adele McCarthy-Beauvais, a second-team All-American last season, scored two goals and had three assists to lead the 14th-ranked Tigers over the 20th-ranked Hawks on Saturday.
Princeton (11-6), winners of seven straight, got three goals from Kathie Nichols and two more from Jenny Edwards.
Freshman Ashleigh Jacobs paced Hartwick (7-7) with one goal and three assists. Megan Thomson had two goals and goalkeeper Sara Daseler made seven saves.

Division III championships
BUFFALO Hartwick junior Chris Maiello finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division III championships.
Maiello's time of 1:41.83 set a school record. He also finished 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:40.22) and 22nd in the 100 freestyle (47.07 seconds).
Swimmers must finish in the top eight to be named All-American.
Those who place between ninth and 16th receive honorable mentions.
