OHS advances with 2-0 triumph
Staff Report
Melissa Pidgeon scored twice, the first coming 12 minutes into play to pace Oneonta's 2-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Susquehanna Valley in a Section Four Class B quarterfinal soccer match.
Yellowjackets coach Helen Sandford, whose team lost, 3-0, at Union-Endicott in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference title game Monday, was not pleased with her team's play.
"They are tired, but we made a lot of mental mistakes, not just physical mistakes," she said. "We made a lot of poor decisions, the type of stuff you learn in JV. You know, in 3 1/2 weeks, we're going to have play back-to-back games. If we play the way we did today, we're not going to get that far."
Pidgeon controlled a loose ball and scored into an open net to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until Mara Primmer set up Pidgeon's 18-yard shot that went in with 32 seconds remaining.
"We had a hard time keeping balls in bounds that we should have and there shots we didn't take we should have," Sandford said. "It was just a collective bad day. We'll get better."
Top-seeded Oneonta will play host to Owego a 3-2 victor over Dryden at 3:30 p.m. Friday in a semifinal.
