Hartwick alumnus earns MVP of A-League

Staff Report

Former Hartwick College soccer player Paul Conway was recently named the A-League Most Valuable Player after leading the league in scoring.

Conway, a 1992 graduate of Hartwick, was also named an A-League first-team all-star. The A-League, which is run by Hartwick graduate Francisco Marcos as commissioner, is considered the second division of U.S. soccer behind Major League Soccer (MLS).

Conway, a striker, finished with 22 goals and three assists in 25 regular season starts with the Charleston Battery. He added four goals and an assist in U.S. Open Cup play and also scored in the playoffs.

"I am extremely happy to have won this both for myself and for the club. It's a tremendous honor," Conway said. "League MVP is a reflection of the team's performance and not just the goals I scored."

A Portland, Oregon native, Conway set several Battery team records. He is now the all-time leader in goals scored (66), points (150), games started (117) and is one assist away from tying the all-time assist record of 19.

Conway's 27 goals tied the most in a season.

Conway, who was voted by the fans as the 2001 Charleston Battery MVP, was a 1989 All-American for Hartwick. He ranks fifth in all-time scoring (109) and fourth in varsity goals (46). Conway had 16 goals and five assists during the 1988 season.

Conway, 31, was the runner-up for MVP honors in 2000. He also led the A-League in scoring and goals scored a year ago.

Conway has 51 goals in his four years with the Battery.
