Spartans boys win first in sectionals
Franklin upsets Milford; Schenevus advances on pks
Staff Report
With three players recovering from a car accident Saturday, Unatego's boys soccer team still managed to knock off No. 5 seed Elmira Notre Dame, 3-2, Wednesday in a Section Four Class C match at Owego.
Robert Stevens' scored two goals and Zach Marsh had the eventual winner for the 12th-seeded Spartans.
Unatego downed Greene, 2-0, in the Midstate Athletic Conference final Saturday. After that match, three Unatego (9-4-4) players were injured in Sidney on the way back from the game.
Adam Short suffered a broken neck, but is expected to make a full recovery, Unatego coach Tom Butts said. Teammates Josh Joslin and Mark Frailey had minor injuries.
"We went with 14 guys and they ran hard from start to finish," Butts said. "They dedicated the game to Adam Short. They wore his number (3) on their socks."
Stevens, who has 27 goals on the season, gave Unatego a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the first half.
After the Crusaders tied the score early in the second half, Stevens and Zach Marsh scored five minutes apart to make it 3-1.
Nick Schwartz's goal midway through second half made it a one-goal game.
Jeff Lundin had 11 saves for the Spartans, who will play Greene at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal.
"They worked him quite a bit in the second half," Butts said. "There were so many balls he went high for. Somehow, he extends in the air and pulls them down."
Butts said this was Unatego's first sectional victory.
