Hawks pound Vassar in state field hockey's first round, 6-2

Two water polo players chosen for select senior team

Josie Moore scored twice as the Hartwick College field hockey team had three goals in each half of a 6-2 victory over Vassar College in a New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association quarterfinal on Wednesday night at All-Weather Field.

The top-seeded Hawks (13-5), will play host to the NYSWCAA semifinals on Saturday and the championship and consolation games on Sunday.

Hartwick will play No. 5 Brockport State in an 11 a.m. semifinal on Saturday. Second-seeded Ithaca and No. 3 Rensselaer play at 1:30 p.m.

Tara Wilkes finished with one goal and one assist for Hartwick. She has 19 goals and six assists for 44 points this season.

Stephanie Lawrence, Kelly Cooman and Cassandra Holleran also scored for the Hawks, who led 3-1 at halftime. Wilkes got her goal with one second left to intermission.

Sarah Margolis-Pineo and Kaitlin Harvie scored for Vassar (7-9).

Water Polo

Two Hawks selected

to Senior Team

Hartwick College sophomore water polo players Sheri Johnson and Ashleigh Jacobs will play for the Northeast Zone Senior Team during competition at Brown University this Saturday and Sunday.

Johnson and Jacobs were selected to the senior team as two of the top 13 water polo athletes from the Northeast Zone. Hartwick teammate Vanessa Malik is an alternate.

Hartwick coach Mike Maroney will be the head coach for the Northeast Zone team. The team will play as a unit for the first time and go up against the University of Massachusetts varsity team and three other squads made up of players who did not make the zone team at the tryouts.

Besides Johnson and Jacobs, the team consists of Noel Pacarro (Brown), Keira Heggie (Brown), Jeanie Ward-Waller (Brown), Melissa Iagulli (Brown), Kelly Chassy (Massachusetts), Melissa Goldberg (Massachusetts), Jenny Edwards (Princeton), Adele McCarthy (Princeton), Erin Agee (Villanova), Elyse Colgan (Annapolis) and Carly Strub (Annapolis).

The Northeast Zone team will also play in the Women's National Invitational in Los Alamitos, California on November 10-11. U.S. National Team coach Guy Baker will use the tourney to prep the National Junior Team and identify prospects for the national program. Other teams competing include: the National Junior Team, Midwest Zone Senior Team, UCLA, USC, Stanford, California and UC-Irvine. Johnson was second on Hartwick in scoring last year with 62 goals and 28 assists for 90 points in 32 games. She also led the Hawks in steals with 68. Johnson was an Eastern College Athletic Conference second-team selection.

Jacobs was third on the team in scoring with 34 goals and 28 assists for 62 points. She was selected as a Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division second-team all-star as a freshman. Malik, also a sophomore, was sixth on the Hawks in scoring with 23 goals and 14 assists for 37 points. Hartwick finished its first year as a varsity program with a 20-14 record and the No. 18 national ranking in 2000.
