Familiar foes meet in battle of Unadilla
Staff Report
Bragging rights for Unadilla are at stake as Midstate Athletic Conference rivals Unadilla Valley and Unatego play at 3:30 p.m. today in a Section Four Class C girls soccer quarterfinal.
"We know each other quite well," said Unatego coach Sue Herodes. "It's not a spoken rivalry between us, but we always seem to play close games."
Unadilla Valley got the best of the Spartans in the regular season, winning, 2-1, in overtime at home and tying, 2-2, at Unatego. However, Unatego needed only a tie in the second game to earn a spot in the MAC Championship. The Spartans defeated Greene, 2-1, to win the league title.
"The fact that they beat us by a half-game in the division certainly adds to the rivalry," said UV coach Chris Bienick.
The fifth-seeded Storm (10-2-3) come off Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Delhi, but will be at less than full strength today. Alyssa Walbrecht, who led the team with 15 goals, suffered a season-ending injury to her left knee against Delhi. Kristin Lorence, UV's second-leading scorer with 14 goals, has been out for a week with a sprained left ankle. She's expected to play, but Bienick said she isn't sure how much.
Unatego, the fourth seed, defeated Southern Cayuga, 2-1, on Geri Genzardi's goal with 15 minutes, 26 seconds left.
The Spartans rely on production from a number of players, including forward Lacey Herring, who led the team with nine goals, and Nichole Decker, a play-making winger who had a team-high seven assists.
"This is the most team-oriented group I've coached," said Herodes, who's coaching in her 11th season. "Sometimes we get too unselfish, but it makes us tougher to play because kids don't have to worry about being marked too closely."
In other Class C games, sixth-seeded Sidney (11-3-2) visits third-seeded Candor (14-1-1), 10th-seeded Trumansburg (8-6-1) visits second-seeded Elmira Notre Dame (16-1) and eighth-seeded Union Springs (11-2-3) visits top-seeded Seton Catholic (14-3).
Oneonta has had two days to think about Tuesday's lackluster 2-0 victory over Susquehanna Valley. The top-seeded Yellowjackets (17-1) play host to fifth-seeded Owego (8-7-1) in the Class B semifinal at 3:30 today. Oneonta defeated Owego, 3-0, and 7-1, during the regular season.
"They have good speed and they hustle, but we have more skill," Yellowjackets coach Helen Sandford said. "We stunk up the place on Tuesday and we know it, but the girls had a good practice (Thursday) and we'll regroup."
Second-seeded Maine-Endwell (11-5) plays host to third-seeded Norwich (11-5) in the other semifinal.
After receiving first-round byes in Class D, top-seeded G-MU and second-seeded Stamford play their first games today. G-MU (13-0-2), the Tri-Valley League co-champion, plays host to eighth-seeded Windham (8-5-2). Delaware League champion Stamford (16-2) plays host to seventh-seeded Margaretville (11-4-3).
In other Class D games, fifth-seeded Laurens (10-4-3) visits fourth-seeded Davenport (12-6) and sixth-seeded Schenevus (12-5-2) visits third-seeded Hunter-Tannersville (9-2-2).
