Healthy Hawks to face Penn St.
Only powerhouse Indiana has had better success against Penn State than the Hartwick College men's soccer team.
The Hawks, who have a 13-5-1 lead in the series and are 3-0-1 in the last four years, play at 24th-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. Friday.
Indiana, at 19-5-2 over the Nittany Lions, has a better record than the Hawks against PSU.
Hartwick is finally at full strength after a number of injury problems plagued the middle portion of the season. The Hawks are 4-0 this season when the 11 starters from the beginning of the season are in the lineup.
Hartwick (7-6) played one of its best games of last season in a 3-1 victory over Penn State at Elmore Field. The Hawks, with Aaron Robinson playing a huge defensive game, battled to a 0-0 tie two years ago at Penn State.
Robinson shadowed 1999 first-team All-American Ricardo Villar and held him scoreless two years ago. Villar, who missed last year's game with an injury, has three goals and 11 assists this season to lead Penn State.
The Nittany Lions (8-3-1) also feature third-team All-American midfielder Derek Potteiger (two goals, three assists) and midfielder Brent Jacquette (three goals, three assists).
Junior midfielder Jonathan Westmaas leads the Hawks in scoring this year with three goals and five assists, despite missing six games with an injury. The Hawks are 5-2 this season when Westmaas plays.
Junior goalkeeper Randall Moate, who has also battled injury problems, has his goals-against average down to 0.75 after shutting out Colgate last Saturday. The Hawks are 5-0 this season when Moate starts the game.
Field Hockey
The Hartwick College field hockey team knows its opponents this weekend at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament.
The top-seeded Hawks, who host the tourney on Saturday and Sunday at All-Weather Field, have played the other three teams this season.
Hartwick will take on No. 5 Brockport State in one semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, while second-seeded Ithaca meets No. 3 Rensselaer in the other game at 1:30 p.m. The consolation game is at 11 a.m. and the title game is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Hartwick defeated Brockport, 4-0, on Sept. 29 at All-Weather Field. Meanwhile, the Hawks took a 3-1 victory at Ithaca and fell 3-1 at Rensselaer.
Sophomore forward Tara Wilkes leads the Hawks with 19 goals and six assists for 44 points. Wilkes ranks seventh all-time in single-season points and is fifth in single-season goals.
Senior midfielder Katie Meyers is among the top 10 scorers, with 12 goals and 52 assists for 76 points. She currently ranks seventh all-time in scoring and is the all-time assist leader. Meyers has five goals and 13 assists this season.
Junior forward Josie Moore (nine goals, eight assists), freshman forward Kelly Cooman (nine goals, five assists) and junior forward Stephanie Lawrence (nine goals, four assists) are also having big seasons for Hartwick.
Brockport (9-9) defeated Geneseo, 1-0 in the quarterfinals. The Golden Eagles, who are led by Nicky Person (four goals), defeated Rensselaer, 1-0 on Oct. 13. Goalkeeper Brittany Phillips has seven shutouts in the last eight games.
Single-day tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students.
Swimming
The top points-scorers return for Hartwick College men's and women's swimming and diving coach Dale Rothenberger. However, depth could be a problem on the men's side.
The Hawks' swim teams begin the season at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Paltz. The diving competition at the dual meet, however, will take place at Hartwick's Moyer Pool at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
With 27 swimmers on the women's roster, Rothenberger will have more depth this season. He will also have three women divers this year after having just one last year. The women's team, which finished 6-6 in dual meets, was hurt by the lack of divers in two close meet losses.
"We're not going to have holes like last year," said Rothenberger, who has 246 victories with the men's and women's swim teams heading into his 17th year at Hartwick. "That's two events (1 and 3-meter diving) where we won't just give away points."
With sophomore Gayle Gregory back, the women's team has its top scorer returning. Gregory, who led the team with 431 points, set school records last year in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.48), 500 freestyle (5:07.63), 1,650 freestyle (17:52.66), 100 backstroke (59.50) and was part of two relay records. She also had three individual victories at the state meet.
Sophomore Julie Landmann had a big first season as well, piling up 429 points to finish second in scoring. Senior Stephanie Badylak was sixth in scoring, while junior diver Erin Rowe was eighth.
Oneonta High graduate Nicole Rothenberger (freestyle, fly) is among the freshmen who are expected to contribute.
OHS graduates Erica Torrey and Tara Rothenberger are captains along with Sue Pelo.
On the men's side, Chris Maiello returns after earning All-American honors in the 200 freestyle.
Hartwick, despite lower numbers this year, returns four of the top five point-scorers for the men's team. John Brennan (individual medley, freestyle) was third on the team with 345 points. Miguel Vargas (fly, freestyle) was fourth with 316 points and Chris Slonaker (freestyle) was fifth at 262 points.
Gladstone Edwards (fly, freestyle), Dustin Pratt (freestyle) and Adam Smith (freestyle) also return. OHS graduate Adam Torrey is one of two freshmen.
