Bean carries OHS football to victory over Norwich
Unatego upends Candor, 48-26
Staff Report
Geoff Bean rushed for a season-high 150 yards and scored three touchdowns as Oneonta High won a Division III finale in the Section Four Football Conference on Friday night, 35-6, over longtime rival Norwich.
Bean opened the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 40 seconds left in the first quarter. He added touchdown runs of 36 and 25 yards in the second quarter, leading the Division III champion Yellowjackets (7-1) to a 28-0 lead at the half.
"And he had one called back for 65 yards," OHS coach Art Rigas said of Bean. "He was in the groove."
Jim Hurtubise contributed to the large halftime lead with a 2-yard run in the second quarter. After Hurtubise scored to give OHS a 14-0 lead, Kevin Lishansky hit a Norwich running back on the Purple Tornado's second play of the next drive and stripped the ball to give OHS possession. Bean scored 2:11 after Hurtubise on the next Oneonta drive.
Alec Macaulay hit Nick Catella for a 33-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter as well. All five of Collin Hoffman's extra points were good.
Norwich averted a shutout by scoring with 35 seconds left.
Oneonta will play Elmira Notre Dame, which defeated Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton on Friday, 14-6, to clinch the Division IV crown, in a Section Four Class B playoff next week. B-G/A is the only team to beat Oneonta this fall, winning two weeks ago, 20-7.
Oneonta will not hold home-field advantage for the playoffs as the two schools are more than 100 miles away. Rigas said the teams will likely play at a Binghamton site at a date and time to be determined.

The Spartans (7-1) recovered from an 18-point halftime deficit, scoring 40 points in the second half to defeat visiting Candor.
"Anything that could wrong did in the first half," Unatego coach Steve Leahy said. "We put the ball on the ground, we had a couple passes tipped and they were intercepted and we missed some defensive keys. We spotted them 19 points in the second quarter.
"People we had counted all year did not come to play, but we said at halftime that you can't point fingers and you have to go out do the things we're capable of," he continued. "We told them we're in a hole, but not so deep we can't overcome it.
"It was maybe one of the biggest second halves we've ever had."
Justin Harris and Tosh DeMulder scored third-quarter touchdowns, DeMulder's a 41-yard run.
Tyler DeMulder's 20-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter tied the score at 26.
On Unatego's next possession, Bobby Colvin took a trap handoff up the middle and scored from 31 yards. Tosh DeMulder's two-point run made it 34-26.
Harris, who had three touchdowns, scored from 1 yard out and Tyler DeMulder's 5-yard scoring closed the scoring.
Tyler DeMulder had 195 yards on the ground and Tosh 146, leading a Spartans ground game that amassed 427 yards.
"Everyone came to play in the second half," said Leahy, whose team has won seven straight games.
