MAC Championships

Walton's Justin Wood and Sidney's Kim Vaccaro won Midstate Athletic Conference individual championships with the fastest times on the 3-mile course at Unatego.

Wood covered the course in 16 minutes, 41 seconds, finishing 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Josh Griswold of Delhi. Wood's finish helped Walton to the MAC team title, 52-56, over Delhi.

Afton's Prahlad Genung, Scott Gleason of Walton and Stefan Janiszawski of Delhi rounded out the top five.

Vaccaro won the girls race in 19:44, 15 seconds ahead of Kelly Billingiere of Harpursville. Teammates Christie Bedell and Kerry Vaccaro finished fourth and fifth, respectively, but Sidney ran incomplete in team scoring.

Unatego, which received top-10 finishes from Winsley Jerauld, Katie Leech, Anne Connor and Julie Rolfe, won the team title with 41 points. Unatego, which was the only complete team, won its first league crown since 1999, when the Spartans earned the Susquenango Association title.

Courtney Stanton's first-half goal off a deflection was enough as host Walton advanced in the first round of the Section Four Class D playoffs.

Jennifer LePinnet made eight saves for the shutout.

Third-seeded Walton plays second-seeded Afton at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Harpursville. Walton lost to Afton, 3-0, twice in the regular season.
