OHS girls advance to B final
Unatego winds UV, 5-0; Schenevus, Laurens move on after pk shootouts

Brittany Mykytyn had two goals and an assist Friday to lead the top-seeded Oneonta High girls soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Owego in a Section Four Class B semifinal.
"We had much better teamwork today," said Yellowjackets coach Helen Sandford, who got her 399th career victory. "We knew we had fallen apart (in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Susquehanna Valley) and we communicated much better."
Mykytyn opened the scoring 2 minutes, 5 seconds in on a shot from the 18 that went through the hands of Owego goalie Betsy Morgan. Mykytyn then set up Jen Compton for a goal in the 10th minute.
Mykytyn made it 3-0 before the first half was over, when she headed in a cross from Meghan Stetson. The goals gave Mykytyn 13 on the season.
Breanna Gault made six saves for the shutout.
Oneonta (18-2), which has a share of the No. 1 Class B ranking in the state, will play No. 2 Maine-Endwell, 3-0 winners over Norwich on Friday, in the finals on Nov. 3.

Calli Jo Sheldon got things started early for Unatego (14-3-1), scoring four minutes into a Section Four Class C quarterfinal on a direct kick from 35 yards out.
"The wind definitely was a factor," said Unatego coach Sue Herodes, whose team took a 5-0 lead into halftime. "(Sheldon) tucked it right under the crossbar."
Sheldon scored again with 8:26 gone, hooking in a corner kick for a 2-0 lead. Fourth-seeded Unatego, which also got goals from Katy White, Jacqui Briguglio and Christina Olsen, took 10 of its 11 shots in the first half.
The Spartans will play at top-seeded Seton Catholic Central in a Class C semifinal at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Herodes said. SCC beat Union Springs on Friday, 5-1, after falling behind, 1-0, at the half.
No. 5 Unadilla Valley, playing without injured forward Alyssa Walbrecht, finished the season at 10-3-3.

Stacey Morris ended Sidney's season on a goal with five minutes left in the second overtime of a Class C quarterfinal. Beth Riggs set up both goals for No. 3 Candor (15-1-1), receiving assists on two corner kicks.
Colleen Kaska put Candor ahead, 1-0, with 23 minutes left in the first half. Christine Mirabito converted an assist from Ember McKown nine minutes later to tie the score.
No. 6 Sidney (12-4-1) got 10 saves from Jenny VanderMeulen.

Cooperstown 2, APW 1
Suzanne Clarvoe, playing for the first time in two weeks because of an injury, scored the go-ahead goal with 24 minutes left in the game to lead the host Redskins to a victory in the Section Three quarterfinals.
Cooperstown scored first on Michelle Valentine's goal on a high shot from 22 yards out 14 minutes into the game.
APW tied it eight minutes into the second half when Alissa Everett scored off a scramble in front.
Clarvoe was named to the Section Three All-Area Team before the game, along with her sister Carolyn, who is out for the year with a knee injury.
Cooperstown visits Tully on Tuesday.

Jessica Talbot had two goals and one assist as host G-MU shut out Windham.
Talbot opened the scoring with 16:41 left in the first half on a shot from the 18. The Raiders made it 2-0 three minutes later, when Talbot set up Shelly Miles for a breakaway goal. It was Miles' 23rd goal of the year.
Talbot completed the scoring on an unassisted goal with 18:30 left in the game.
"We were really concerned with the wind heading in," said G-MU coach Todd Talbot. "But we actually passed the ball better in the second half going into the wind. A key to our success is when we slow down and make that extra pass instead of hurrying to shoot it."
Top-seeded G-MU plays host to Laurens in a Class D semifinal on Tuesday.

Katie Andrews scored into the right corner on Laurens' fifth and final penalty shot to lead the visiting Leopards over Davenport.
Davenport went first in the shootout and Lara Leonard converted. Laurens' Hannah Tirado shot next and also scored. The two teams then combined to miss seven straight before Andrews ended it.
Laurens scored first in regulation on Jen Hatella's goal late in the first half. Davenport tied it when Renee Butts scored on a high shot from outside the 18 with 5:19 left in the game.
Fifth-seeded Laurens visits top-seeded G-MU on Tuesday. In their last meeting, Laurens lost, 3-2, in overtime in a game that was appealed by the Leopards.
"We wanted to face them," said Laurens coach Bonnie Johnson. "That overtime loss to them was the toughest I've had to take in my career. In their hearts, our girls felt they had tied that game."

Heather Amadova scored off a pass from Mary Velan with 11:04 left as second-seeded Stamford escaped with a victory over the visiting Blue Devils.
"It was a relief when Heather scored," said Stamford coach Jeff Gearhart. "You just knew as the game progressed that it was going to be 1-0. The wind was a big factor. We had it in the first half and controlled the play and they had it in the second and dominated."
Sarah Bell made seven saves for Stamford, including a diving stop on a one-timer just before Amadova's goal.
Stamford plays host to Schenevus on Tuesday.

Schenevus converted three of its four penalty kicks and Sarah Bleich made three saves in the shootout as visiting Schenevus defeated H-T. Teresa Spano, Jen Barton and Naomi Duncan scored in the shootout.
Schenevus' Jennifer Klein and H-T's Sandy Truesdell exchanged first-half goals.
Schenevus visits Stamford on Tuesday. The Dragons lost, 5-2, to Stamford in the regular season.
