Nazareth wins state volleyball title at O-State

Nazareth's women's volleyball team successfully defended its top seed at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament by completing a sweep Sunday at Oneonta State's Alumni Field House.
The Golden Flyers, who received a bye in the preliminary round, went 3-0 in the two-day, 12-team tournament, capping the title with a 30-25, 30-22, 30-27 sweep of defending state champion Ithaca College.
On Saturday, Oneonta State lost two matches. The Red Dragons lost a 2-0 lead in an opener with Vassar, which rallied for a 22-30, 24-30, 30-18, 30-20, 15-13 victory.
Senior Jayme Stewart had 13 kills and 11 digs and sophomore setter Lacey Musso had 22 assists and 14 digs to pace O-State, which later dropped a ninth-place match to Union, 30-22, 30-23, 30-22.
Oneonta High graduate Sarah Pontius had 37 assists and three aces to lead Union. Junior Deb Graffigino finished with a team-high 17 assists and sophomore Jenn Maguffin had seven kills and nine digs in the loss.
Pontius, who earned a spot on the NYSWCAA All-Championship Team, had 33 assists in Union's 30-19, 30-25, 30-25 loss to Cortland State in a Saturday opener.
Elmira defeated RIT in the third-place match, 30-25, 30-32, 32-30, 21-30, 15-9.
