Football
Union 23, Hartwick 21
Senior quarterback Ben Gilbert finished 17 of 30 for 220 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 18 Union College to victory on Saturday at Frank Bailey Field.
The victory kept Union's (7-1) NCAA playoff hopes alive while the Hawks fell to 6-2 with their second consecutive defeat.
James Weaver set up what proved to be the winning touchdown when he intercepted Hartwick junior quarterback Daniel Pincelli and returned the ball 14 yards to give the Dutchmen possession at the Hartwick 41-yard line with 7:40 left to play. On third down, Gilbert connected with St. Denis for a 23-14 lead as the PAT kick failed.
The Hawks took the ensuing kickoff and drove 74 yards in six plays, with Pincelli finding Jeremy Godfrey on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 3:13 left. Matt Minar's PAT kick cut Union's margin to 23-21.
After a five-yard penalty for kicking the ball out of bounds, Hartwick was forced to re-kick. The Hawks attempted an onsides kick that was recovered by Union freshman Carm Taglione at the Hartwick 41-yard line.
The Dutchmen sealed the game when Gilbert connected with tight end Randy Kerwin on a 12-yard pass on third and 11 from the Hawks' 31. Gilbert took a knee on the next two plays.
Pincelli passed Brad Ruderman (1992-95) in all-time varsity passing yards at Hartwick. Pincelli threw for 338 yards on Saturday for a varsity total of 5,968, which is 9 more yards than Ruderman's total.
Pincelli (25-for-55), who had two touchdown passes called back because of penalties, hit Ryan Soule with 11:38 left in the first quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
Hartwick took advantage of a high center snap from punt formation to move in front, 14-7. A 32-yard loss by Union on fourth-and-7 from the Dutchmen's 40-yard line gave the Hawks a first and goal at the 8-yard line. Pincelli lost 5 yards after recovering the fumbled center snap on first down, then connected with Ty Smith for a 13-yard touchdown in the left corner of the end zone with 8:11 left in the third quarter.
Oneonta High graduate Anthony Tomaino led Hartwick with 11 tackles. Teammates John Joseph and Nick Tucci each contributed 10. Soule had eight catches for 108 yards and teammate Ryan Johnson had six receptions for 78 yards. Hartwick's running game netted 14 yards on 13 carries.
The Hawks will play host to Muhlenberg College (Pa.) at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
